Critical Teaching Manifesto

I promise to build relationships with all of my students. Positive and meaningful connections provide a foundation for success. Students need to feel supported by their educators in order to feel vulnerable in being their whole-selves. Engaging students in learning begins with acknowledging their interests and connecting lessons to those interests.

I promise to provide a safe learning environment for all students. Students are confident in sharing their thoughts and opinions without fear of judgment from their teachers and fellow peers. Within a safe space, educators are aware of the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health of their students. In addition, offering student choice into the learning space allows students an opportunity to feel heard and that their opinions matter.

I promise to advocate for my students. Effectively listening to students wants and needs will help them on their journey to success. It is also important to fight for student’s rights, especially those students in marginalized groups who may be less inclined to speak up for themselves. Making resources and supports available for students is also a responsibility of being an advocate.

I promise to promote inclusive and cultural perspectives. As educators we must challenge ourselves in going above and beyond to bring resources into our classrooms from various perspectives such as Indigenous and LGBTQ views. It is important for students to think critically about their own beliefs and perspectives on the world around them. Students will be respectful and understanding of cultures or perspectives that differ from their own. Inclusive and cultural spaces promote acceptance of varying perspectives.
