Student’s with disabilities face so many challenges when it comes to receiving an education. Most of the time they feel exclusion from society and their school. We can see this happen on a day to day basis. It is difficult for students with disabilities to receive a proper education, with the lack of resources some schools may have. It is unfortunate to say that this is not one of the schools main priority when it comes to funding. The concern of ‘will my child receive the same quality of education just as any other student’ is always going to be there. While there are some institutions that are trying to provide the best education for all the students, disabilities or not, some are unable to do so. In order to provide a safe environment for all students to learn in, there are steps that need to be put into place.
In order for students with disabilities to have a quality education, just as any other student, there is a certain criteria to follow. The teacher will need to be properly trained and have that background knowledge of how to go about teaching in different learning styles to accommodate for everyone. There also needs to be assessable and inclusive learning spaces in the school for the students to feel welcome. Involvement from the community as well as from parents for the students will be another key factor for success. I do know there are schools out there with programs for students with disabilities which is an amazing thing to have. Having that safe space for students who need a little extra help will help them tremendously and gives them a chance for a quality education.
My next steps would be to do more research on students with disabilities in the classroom and really explore the background information behind all of it. I would compare different articles/journals to understand how schools are accommodating these students in their own schools and what changes should be made. I would try to also focus on how these students are being included, and receiving quality education just as any other student in school.
