Treaty Education and Citizenship

Treaty Education and Citizenship

Citizenship can have many different interpretations depending on perspective. For me, I have always seen citizenship as the thing that shows where you belong. It makes you a member of society and shows that you have put in the effort to help your society.

Treaty Education and the concept of citizenship go hand in hand. Treaty education can have many approaches, but it is something that requires participation from everyone involved and plays heavily into the idea of being a justice-oriented citizen or a participatory citizen. In the video with Joel Westheimer, one of the big questions is if schools are the right place to be teaching this. I feel like schools are exactly the place this should be taught because teachers are the ones who are meant to understand the biases that come with different narratives of Treaty Education and as teachers, they understand how to fit into the role of seeking social justice and improving society. This idea of Treaty Education and citizenship also fits into the praxis model of education. These three concepts clearly show how important it is that Treaty Education is taught in schools and to students at every level, as it helps students understand Canada’s past and how they can help move forward in the future.
