Cyber Safety

In today’s digitally connected world, cyber safety has become an essential aspect of our daily lives. As we increasingly rely on the internet for communication, education, and entertainment, understanding how to stay safe online is crucial. Cyber safety encompasses a range of practices and measures designed to protect individuals from online threats and ensure a secure and safe digital experience. As we spend more time online, it’s essential to understand the various aspects of cyber safety to protect ourselves and others from potential online threats. Key areas of focus include privacy issues, cyberbullying, scams, and managing digital footprints that can follow you for life.

During my schooling, cyber safety was taught in a manner that frightened us into believing the internet was a dark and dangerous place. While the internet can indeed be harmful if misused, instilling fear was not an effective method. We were constantly warned, “we can see everything you’re looking at,” which was not a proper way to educate us about technology. This approach instilled fear among my peers and I without truly explaining the negative consequences of abusing technology. I believe the right way to teach young kids about technology is to clearly explain both the potential dangers and benefits of the internet. By providing honest and comprehensive information, we can better equip children to make informed decisions about internet safety. However, I also believe it is important for educators to have access to the same resources as their students in a respectful way to ensure appropriate use and to maintain a safe online presence.

Children and teenagers are particularly vulnerable to online threats. Educating them about the potential dangers and teaching them how to navigate the internet safely is crucial. This includes discussing the importance of not sharing personal information, recognizing inappropriate content, and knowing how to report issues.

Rise of the Tech

The rapid evolution and rise of technology, as highlighted in our recent lecture and by Michael Wesch in his video, have profound implications for the future of education. This transformation presents both opportunities and challenges for educators, students, and the community the school is framed upon.  As an educator, reflecting on these changes is crucial for shaping an effective promising education for the children of tomorrow.

Michael Wesch emphasizes the shift towards participation that is facilitated by digital tools and social media platforms. In this new culture, individuals are not just passive consumers of information but active contributors and collaborators as anyone is able to start a page. This change has revolutionized the future and gave voice to those backgrounds that were never to heard and valued. For the classroom, this means that learning can become more interactive, collaborative, and student-focused by becoming personalized to meet each students needs.

Reflecting on the insights from the lecture and Wesch’s video, it is clear that the new culture of participation and the digital age of our world is chaining quickly.  By embracing the opportunities and addressing the challenges, we can create a more engaging, inclusive, and effective educational experience for all students. As educators, our role is to guide and support students in navigating this complex narrative, empowering students to become active, informed, and responsible participants in the digital age, that are responsible for their digital footprint.

Never Miss A Good Song Again…

Shazam is an app that I have known about forever but never really started to use it until recently. The most annoying thing is when you are out in public and someone starts playing a good song and you do not know it… you can either interrupt them and the song and ask them what it is called, wait and hope for  the best, or you can simply use Shazam! This is the quickest and easiest option, and would be a great use for music teachers in the classroom, as they can use it themselves and introduce their students to the app.

Shazam is an app you can download onto your phone for free, and use to identify the song playing in real life! Using the mics in the phone the phone is able to listen to the words/beat and rhythm of the song to identify it!

I can easily access Shazam in a hurry by pulling the control centre down on my iPhone, selecting the Shazam button and immediately it begins listening to the song around it. This is a great tool that adds convenience to your daily life as well as having the ability to easily identify a song as the tip of your finger tips

Daily Tech Use…

Like most people, my screen time is probably higher than I would like it to be, but it is important to remember how easily we can get sucked into our phone. The use of my phone and its apps/abilities is primarily for leisure and social interaction, however I still use my phone for reasons outside of that, ei., all my banking is done online through my phone or computer.

For many people around my age (early 20s), Snapchat is the app that is used as a primary mode of communication as it is quick, easy and effective. I use the reminders app to that comes on every apple product, to keep myself organized. I can share my reminders between my phone and computer easily as they’re both apple products. With the reminders app,  I am able to keep my life organized as I can easily date everything and have a visual reminder of my schedule at the tip of my fingers.

Every phone and app has distractions that can eat away at your productivity and time, and for me personally an app that does that is TikTok, as it easy to continuously scroll for hours. TikTok perfectly curates videos that are suited to every users personal taste in order to draw attention in. If one was wanting to  minimize their time on TikTok, a good strategy to use would be to set a timer through your phone, in order for a visual reminder to be displayed. Another idea would be to use the daily limit feature that the app provides and set yourself a limit, that way the app will remind you when you’ve hit your limit. There is also a parental controls function that would be beneficial if you had kids on TikTok.

I found that I naturally have established limits and boundaries for myself and my personal screen time, again this is something that I could definitely be better at and work towards though. I separate my school/work and personal email so that I do not get easily overwhelmed with emails. Another boundary I set, is to only open a text/email if I am available to reply at that moment, otherwise the odds of me replying are reduced. Through all this, I am able to maintain a mostly healthy mix of using technology for personal use and work related use.

An Equipment Mishap

When I first decided to take up pickleball, I was aware that the cost of equipment could vary significantly. Initially, I opted for a $20 set from Winners. However, one of the paddles broke during our third game, snapping as my partner went for the game-winning point. After this incident, we went to Sport Chek and invested in a $130 set. Although it seemed expensive at first, I was thoroughly enjoying the game, so the investment felt justified. So far, it has proven to be a worthwhile purchase.

Acquiring the Right Tools for the Job

When diving into a new sport as an athlete or coach potato it is important to have the right tools for the job! As a newcomer to pickleball,  I researched the equipment needed to play this sport to the best of my abilities! The equipment I found that were essential to have for success included: pickleball paddles, pickleball balls, court shoes, proper shoes and access to public courts (Ana, 2024).  In this blog I will show you how I guided myself through picking these tools!

Introduction

My name is Megan Hauser, and I recently completed my Bachelor of Education degree at the University of Regina. I am currently pursuing a Certificate in Extended Studies in Inclusive Education.

I was born and raised near a small town outside Humboldt, SK, called Middle Lake, where I attended a K-12 school with fewer than 200 students (my graduating class had only four people!). My love for teaching began at a young age. I would often play pretend school with friends and even imaginary students, always walking around with a whiteboard marker in hand, instructing my imaginary class. From a young age, I knew I wanted to teach children one day!

Learning Pickleball!

Image taken from Google.

For my learning project, I have decided to learn how to play pickleball! This includes learning all the individual skills needed to play as well as the technical and rules side of the sport.

At this point (2 weeks into the semester), I have started to be able to properly hit the ball, aim and I am now working on applying pressure/strength to hit the ball further and harder.  I began with familiarizing myself with the sport by googling the rules and regulations, and then went to the court to began rallying around. From here, I tried many different techniques and strategies that I had seen done in my previous research. I have also played a few full games of pickleball, even winning one!
