Decisions, decisions!

The grade 6 curriculum talks a lot about decision making and the idea of identity. Therefore, for this lesson, I focused on this.

Another student in our class gave me this idea as she shared it in our Health Class.

I began the lesson by handing out sticky notes to each student. On each sticky note, they had to write items that were important to them. These items were a part of their identity in some way.

The pink sticky note was for people.

The yellow sticky note was for memories

The blue sticky note was for goals.

The green sticky note was for places.

I was impressed with the thoughtful responses I received and how seriously the students took it. However, it took a lot longer than I anticipated (pretty much everything does).

I then asked the students to put the sticky notes on the board so we could look at them and have a discussion. These discussions would be based on what was on the board. For example: what color is most represented? What does this tell us? What color is the least represented? Why might this be?

I was then going to hand out a question sheet to assess the students. However, we never ended up getting to that, however, if I had more time with them, I would have. This lesson occurred on my last day so I had no way to add extra time in.

Materials:

For this lesson, you would need sticky notes or colored paper, as well as reflection questions.
