As the world advances and society evolves, so should the discussion around respecting and incorporating different sexualities and genders into our classrooms.
I believe we have to educate not just the children but society (parents, staff, neighbors, community members, etc.) about important information surrounding queer and trans people), educated them on facts about how they are all just human beings at the end of the day and do not deserve this slander. I see this movement as if it was a chain effect, that if we educate one person, it will expand it and educate other people about the same principles. It will become a strong chain as everybody unites to support and respect each other because we need each other’s support at the end of the day.
Then my second resolution would be an attempt to create an inclusive/open-minded/accepting classroom environment full of diverse books, toys, and educational devices. Have authors from different parts of the world and have books that discuss different families and types of genders and sexualities, That way, children can enter these classrooms and know that they feel a sense of belonging as the books that they are reading in class can pertain to their life in a positive viewpoint.
Hey Mike, I found the following quote: “I believe we have to educate not just the children but society (parents, staff, neighbors, community members, etc.)”. I to agree that the community should be aware of such news as they have a say in their own community and to stand up for what is right.
I also enjoyed reading the quote: “my second resolution would be an attempt to create an inclusive/open-minded/accepting classroom environment full of diverse books, toys, and educational devices.” Do you plan on integrating this method in your future classroom?
Hey Michael! I really enjoyed reading your blog post. I especially like the part when you talk about the chain effect, it is so true that by educating one person you are helping educate the people around them too. After all, a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. My question for you is if you have any books in mind that showcase families with same sex marriages? I think that is an awesome idea, and a great thing to teach in the classroom!
