Topics/activities that initiated my reflection – What I from this class is further of what visible learning is. We checked out Hattie’s Research Knowledge, and this was interesting to view how assessment influences and also viewing the data for these assessments. I learned that standard deviation is a formula to calculate effect size, and from the video #1, I learned the influences of interdependent learners as well. Within Hattie’s Research Knowledge during this class period, I enjoyed the visible learning influences with the puzzle. The puzzle was fun to do and took me a couple tries. I also enjoyed checking out the articles of “Hattie’s Ranking: 252 Influences And Effect Sizes Related To Student Achievement” and the website Visible Learning Meta. Both of these resources I believe are useful information to understand further into the influences of assessment and these resources both have a lot of data to back up the types of assessments and there influences. Lastly, I enjoyed the resource shared which was SK Math Assessment (Grade 1-9 2021). What I like about this resource is that it has a lot of questions for math for grades 1-9. For assessment, I believe that questions are crucial and I really like how these questions are outlined and its useful for forming assessment for math.
Content connections: academic knowledge, “educational” experiences & perspectives on assessment material – My academic knowledge about the topics discussed such as the SK Math Assessment, I make a connection to what I was taught in the Fall 2023 semester with taking a math course. Within this course a big part the assessment involved questions being asked towards the students. Knowing that questions are a big part in assessment during that time, helped me become better prepared when planning my unit plan for pre-internship from this semester. Another academic connection I formed is the triangulation and how questions would perhaps be in the conversations and observations section. Knowing this knowledge, I can apply it to all subjects with forming assessment and ensuring there are questions asked during the lessons.
Inform & influences for future teaching (need/ learn more about) – For my future teachings, I plan on adopting the visible learning influences within assessment, to know what best influences students under their circumstances. Another key takeaway is understanding better how crucial questions are within the process of assessment. Forming questions will help better understand the stage each individual student is undergoing.
SYMBOL: reminder of reflection – The symbol I choose this week involves questions being asked. Questions are a part of life long learning, so to remember this reflection I chose questions to be my focus. For questions they can start with how, what, where, when, why, and how – this is a part of the questions involved within my symbol.
How I will go forward as a teacher in myassessment literacy – I plan on going forward with a mindset that questions are okay to be asked for all. Learning is a life long journey so encouraging questions to be a part of the life long learning is a good life skill going into this profession of being a teacher. Also encouraging students to ask questions is also very important to set for the classroom.
