Pedagogy

I believe that context is the window to understanding. Teachers have the power to unlock potential within their students. Pedagogy is the only vessel that can spark creativity and engagement from students.

In my classroom, I will cultivate a safe environment where students can express artistic freedom. With my pedagogy I will make an effort to lead by example. Most importantly I will show students that mistakes are okay, the real learning will come from how they work through a challenge.

Assessment

I believe each student deserves the opportunity to showcase their knowledge in a way that embraces their unique differences.

In my classroom, I will move away from standardized testing and focus more so on formative assessment. It is my duty to adapt to each one of my students’ ways of learning.

Social Justice

I believe that students must be shown the injustices that occur in our current society, in order for them to grow into advocates for the oppressed.

A big piece of this will be trying to decolonize the education system and integrating Indigenous history into the curriculum.

In my classroom, I will have a “No TRASH” policy. Which stands for:

No Transphobia

No Racism

No Able-ism

No Sexism

No Homophobia

Every student has the right to belong at school, and prejudice and hatred will have no place in my classroom.

“Students who are loved at home come to school to learn. And students who aren’t, come to school to be loved.” – Nicholas Ferroni

Lifelong Learning

I believe teachers must care for the whole student; mind, body, and spirit.

The hidden curriculum is the lessons that students will apply in their social/emotional skills that are vital to their development.

In my classroom, I will care for more than just the intellectual development of my students. I will also be mindful about how much students can teach me in return. Every student has a voice that deserves to feel safe and heard.
