First Week: February 4th, 2020
My first day at my field placement, I was introduced to the grade one classroom where they were learning about penguins. They were learning the beginning steps of working towards making a report about penguins.
For the next class, I got to join grades one to five for their art class, where they made Valentine’s Day gift card holders.
Second Week: February 11th, 2020
I started my day with joining the grade two’s and three’s for their science class, where they were learning about the differences between various types of animals (amphibians, insects, mammals, birds, fish, etc).
After, I went to the grade four and five classroom where they were also doing science, but they were focusing on different tools used to measure and detect temperature and weather.
Third Week: February 25th, 2020
For the first period, I joined the grade one’s for their health class. They were learning about dental health and the importance of taking care of their teeth. This was learned through an experiment of putting a few different hard boiled eggs, representing teeth, into separate cups filled with different liquids (water, coffee, Coke, and Pepsi). A few days later, they would check on the eggs to see how they changed.
In the second period, I joined the grade two and three class who were also doing health, but their focus was on the different roles that are held in households, and some different aspects of health (physical, emotional, mental, spiritual).
Our forum post that we had for this week in our ECS 100 class focused on space, place, and boundaries. We were asked to share our different classroom set ups.
Fourth Week: March 3rd, 2020
This week, I started my day doing math with the grade two/three class. The class time was split into two halves, one half being where grade two did a math test while the grade three’s did math games, and then they switched.
For the second period, I joined the grade four and five math class. Their class is split up into five groups, and then every fifteen minutes, each group switches stations. The different stations include: teacher time, math games, technology, independent work, and math facts. Part of the second period was also spent doing English. They focussed on learning about how to look at an image, and give a brief description of it, so that if someone else were to read the description, they could visualize the original picture.
For the third period, I joined the Kindergarten and grade one class, where they learned about the idea of the “lion” and “lamb” regarding the month of March. The class consisted of them listening to a story, and then creating a lion and lamb craft. Each student was given a paper plate, and they were given the task of making one side a lamb, and the other side a lion. The plan from that day on, was that each morning, the children would be asked by their teacher if they thought the weather outside was like a “lion” or a “lamb” and use their craft to vote.
Fifth Week: March 10th, 2020
This week I started my day in the grade four and five math class, where they were learning about fractions.
In the second period, I had the opportunity to join a high school teacher who was working with the grade four’s and five’s, testing their reading skill level in preparation for report cards. I got to join her as she tested each student, and then after they finished, she would explain to me the process of how she graded them.
For the third period, I joined the grade one’s as they played computer math games, while their teacher tested each individual student’s reading level.
Due to all the chaos of Covid-19, our last field placement days were cancelled, making me sad that I would miss being able to see the other grades, which would have happened in the following weeks. However, I am very thankful for the opportunity I had to learn from the teachers and students that I got to work with. I had a wonderful experience!
