Reading response to Kumashiro’s “The Problem With Common Sense” (2009)

Kumashiro defines common sense as a form of social pressure that ‘limits what is considered to be consistent with the purposes of schooling’ (Kumashiro. (2009). Through real experiences during a teaching practice in Nepal Kumashiro has come up with some observations involving common sense and why we continue to involve oppressive and discriminatory practices within school systems. It is important to pay attention to common sense because on the basis of tradition and comfort, we don’t always realize the harm they can do to students’ identities. There is hidden discrimination in our school systems because they have been designed around what was once considered an ideal student. Since our world has evolved to fit the needs of many different social markers like race, class, gender, sexual orientation, religion, etc. then its important to look beyond common sense in order to break free of the uncomfortable obligations that our current definition of common sense puts on society. https://drive.google.com/file/d/19qJJP3W5xa_Y1Vezet_H18xVo1NUvGqE/view
