Punishment in the Digital World – Vigilantism and Shaming

December 5, 2024 0 By Olivia Brenner

We have discussed a lot through this semester on digital footprints and our digital identity online. It’s definitely a very important topic to implement in classrooms but another really important topic is cyber vigilantism and cyber shaming which both are harmful to others online.

Many people will expose others in a  negative way online often from outrage or desire to hold someone accountable. When taking action most people don’t think before posting or sharing because they are in a mindset which can escalate to harassment, cyberbullying or unfair punishment.

Cyber vigilantism

Cyber vigilantism can be individually or in groups and is the use of digital tools and platforms to enforce their views and can include hacking and organising mass reporting. People who participate in cyber vigilantism are usually participating in violating others’ privacy and in some situations also violate legal norms, this is done when an individual has been involved in a crime or controversial activities.

Cyber Shaming

Cyber shaming is slightly different from cyber vigilantism. It involves critiquing, mocking or humiliating someone online. In most situations this happens due to a reaction from someone’s behavior, opinions or mistakes. Cyber shaming is often seen when “cancelling” celebrities for something they had done which happens anytime a celebrity makes the slightest mistake

Both of these can lead to lasting harm to someone’s reputation which is why it’s important to handle online justice in a positive way to avoid problems for others.
