Education in a Digital World with Wesch’s ideas!!

The establishment of a newly cultural mode of participation promotes a new understanding how to organize the schooling for students as users of diverse media in a networked, participatory, and digital age. According to me, for my future classroom, as stated by Wesch based on his analysis, the world has changed and so has the culture of participation thus requiring a complete rethink on learning. In a future classroom this will mean having a class that is not just a consumer of information but a producer and an participant in a global learning community. Thus, schools need to be the environment where students practice being individuals who engage other individuals, solve problems collectively, use technologies to accomplish their goals. Students should be allowed to co construct knowledge; work in groups or in teams and outside classroom undertaking various projects which requires creativity and innovation. Technology should be incorporated into the regular teaching practice to enhance the delivery of content by making teachings more relevant, fun and engaging so that students can learn to use innovations in teaching intrusively, safely and appropriately. Education should include the ability to work with learners from other cultures on projects that allow students from different parts of the world solve real life issues with different perspectives. It is also time for traditional schooling models to incorporate blended learning, flipped classroom and anytime anywhere learning paths, and the use of technology.

We should also be mindful that technology and internet must be made available to all students to prevent the digital gap. Given the amount of information available to students, educators are challenged with the task of teaching students how to critically evaluate sources of information, to be able to distinguish between news sources that hold a particular stance or bias and those that do not, and specifically to avoid fake news. Schools must also show students how they can engage too much with technology and too little with the traditional ways of learning directly from teachers and peers, need for mental and sometimes physical rest and breaks, and the need to be mindful. The participatory culture therefore provides corporate social responsibility platform for schools to become the centers of continuing education. By developing a model in which students, teachers, and communities are all learners, education becomes not what students receive but a powerful process of changing students into thinking, engaged, active, and moral citizens ready to occupy positions in a global digital society.
