New Tech Tool Discovered

I decided to choose the Videoscribe tech tool to review and become familiar with to possibly use in my future classroom. Videoscribe is a white-board video creator. I am not a very techy person and always try to stay away from tech tool apps I am not familiar with. I started out by going over the tutorials that are there to help give you instructions and teach you how to design certain parts of your white-board. These tutorials gave me a lot of insight on how to navigate this tech tool and design my own white-board. Although I found it quite interesting and neat it was still a bit of a struggle to navigate. Before starting completely blank,  I decided to explore the templates and choose one that I liked.

From this I edited the template of my choice and made it my own. I chose to just start with a template that was already made as I am unfamiliar with this app and needed a bit of a ‘starter’ to get me going. I did have some struggles playing around with this tool and learned it does take quite a bit of time to grasp and understand how it works. I am still learning how to use this tool but I think I got a pretty good grasp on it now but I am hoping to try out the audio feature!

From screen recording it, I also tried out the tech tool ‘ScreenCastify’ which is a screen recording extension. This tool was pretty easy to navigate and I got to use it to record my white board creation.

I would use both these tools in the classroom as they seem pretty handy to have. The   videoscribe can be used for so many things such as creating lessons, reviewing previous learning, preparing for a substitute teacher, making posters, etc. I personally think this tech tool reaches different levels of the SAMR model. It has both enhancement and transformations that can be changed and designed however you would like. The screencastify recording extension is always a great tool to be used in the classroom. You can record the slides you may be presenting as well as yourself talking to the class. It can be used to reflect back on or for a student who was absent.

This link should take you to my white-board creation!

The Struggle of Crocheting

Crocheting turned out to be way harder than I expected it to be. I chose to learn from a video I found on YouTube and although the steps were easy to follow (most of the time) the crocheting part was a struggle to get a hold of and keep a steady pace. I started out with too thick of yarn and that’s where the struggle really began. I got in contact with my friend and she let me know which yarn and hook would be the best to crochet with as a beginner. Once I got all my stuff organized and ready to go, I started watching a step by step video on how to make a granny square. This process was frustrating and I did make mistakes along the way and had to undo and redo some parts of my tiny square. The technique of it was hard to grasp onto but it was very repetitive and I did start to catch onto the process of it. During the process of making my granny square, I learned that you have to keep count of the stitches to know when to do the next step. I kept losing track of where I was at and it took awhile to get back on track and figure out where I left off or what went wrong. My first granny square is a bit lopsided and is not a perfect square but it is something. I am hoping to make enough granny squares that I will be able to stitch together to make a baby blanket as my final product. I’m excited to see how the process will go and all the new things I will learn throughout my crocheting journey.

Technology + Me

Technology plays a huge role in my daily life. It is always available and I carry it with me everywhere I go right in my pocket. It is very helpful but it can also be very distracting. I do not use it as a time saver or in a wise way but mainly just for leisure and social interaction purposes. When it comes to using technology for academic purposes, I tend to struggle. I do not find that I  use my technology wisely academically. I get distracted and spend more time on leisure apps than academic apps. I can not stay productive on technology as there are so many options you have to distract you while using it. From this class, I have learned of apps that can help you stay focused by blocking certain apps usage on your device. I have always thought of technology as a bad thing due to how distracting it can be but from what I have already learned in this class, technology can be a great asset to you when used wisely.

I have tried to use an app on my phone called “downtime” where it would not allow you on certain apps after a certain time. This did not last long since I got annoyed with it and just would turn it off so I could still go on those apps. These apps would be the ones that reduce my productivity in a day such as Snapchat, Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook. These four apps play a major role in my daily technology use and they are used way more than any academic apps. The only thing to reduce the amount of daily activity on these apps is to stay busy throughout the day off of technology completely. I want to find a better strategy so that I can stay productive while using technology and get done what I need to do.

I am looking forward to all the tips and tools I will learn throughout this class!

The Beginning

For my learning project I decided to learn crocheting. I have always thought crocheting seemed to be fun, and a mind easing and stress relieving activity. I have no prior knowledge on crocheting and I hope I will have the patience to learn. I have never tried crocheting before but I am excited to learn what it is all about and learn what different things I can make. I talked to one of my friends about crocheting since she loves it and she recommended I start with granny squares. I am not too sure what I want to create for a bigger project but I was thinking just to start small and make a pot holder as my first creation. As I get more comfortable with crocheting, I am hoping to start making something bigger such as a baby blanket.

Since I am a beginner, I will be focusing on the beginner stitches. My goal is to learn the basic stitches and put them to the test. I will learn these by watching step by step youtube videos. I am planning on mainly using youtube videos as my way of learning how to crochet but I may expand to different websites depending how I am grasping on to the concept of crocheting. As I have been researching crocheting I have already discovered the many different weights of yarn and different hook sizes. I will have to determine which ones will work best for me.

I will also be getting some of my inspiration off of Pinterest to help guide me.

I have high hopes for this learning journey and am excited to see what all I can do by the end of it!

Who Am I?

Hi, my name is Payton Pugh and I will be going into my third year of elementary education in the fall semester 2025. I am from Rose Valley, a small town 2 ½ hours north of Regina. I grew up on a farm with my parents, and three brothers. Throughout my high school years I did a lot of babysitting for many families and when I chose to start helping in the Kindergarten classroom, I knew right there that I wanted to be a teacher.

I do not have much experience with using educational technology. I am not a blogger and have never blogged before but since we have been discussing blogging in class, I have found it quite interesting and am excited to start blogging and see what all I will take away from this experience.
