Wooden Unilateral Bear
I decided to carve a wooden bear for this week’s Learning project. To learn how to do this I watched another YouTube video. I was scrolling through videos to which most did not inspire me until I stumbled across this video by the user LINKER
The video was informative and easy to follow as LINKER slowed down lots to really explain what he was doing and why. Some of the angles of the video made it difficult at times to see exactly what cut he was doing, but this was not often so it didn’t affect the learning experience. The final product of the video was really nice too. I liked how he made the bear be on top of the log. That’s what really intrigued me about this project and why I ultimately chose to try it. In the video LINKER uses wooden dowels from a department store to carve with. As you’ll notice in my video I used a dried up stick from my back yard. I liked using that a lot more than the blocks of wood I have used in previous projects because it feels more authentic. Plus the wood was really soft and easy to cut!
For some reason my video got age restricted and is only available on youtube. I’ll include a link RIGHT HERE that you can click to watch the video
As you may notice my bear only has one ear by the end of the project. This is because the stick I was using was maybe a little too skinny and so when it came to carving out the ears, there was not much room for error. Since I am still very new to carving and learning more and more each week, I caught the grain near the ear and chipped off the ear. It was to far gone to salvage so I had to take it off and round it out. Other than that I really like how it turned out. It was a difficult carve because of lots of inwards cuts that had to go against the grain. I like when the project requires something that I haven’t done before since it gives me new skills to use. With all the different techniques and cuts that each individual project requires I become a more well rounded carver.
