Whittle Me This!
Welcome to the beginning of my Learning Project Journey. For as long as I can remember I have been a builder and a crafter. I started young with Lego. Then moved on to smaller figurines as I got a bit older. Recently I’ve been tinkering with wood. Building chairs and foldable tables for me and my friends to use when we get together. I find great satisfaction in creating the things that I imagine in my head so that others can see them too.
Recently, videos have been popping up on my Instagram and YouTube of people wood carving and whittling which has really grabbed my attention. I often use wood when I work on projects, but I’ve never carved designs into it. Seeing these videos makes me want to try it. With perfect timing, I am now assigned with the Learning Project so I figure I have to give this a try. I am not too sure if I will reach the level of skill of these videos during this class, but my hope is to get there someday, even if that takes way longer than EDTC 300. The videos make it look so simple, but I am sure it is not as easy as it looks. One of the videos that intrigued me the most is shown below. It’s a long one so I don’t expect you to watch the whole thing from start to finish, but skip around and take a look!
The plan for my learning project is to start small and ramp it up gradually. I ordered a whittling kit off of amazon to start my journey. I want to begin with smaller pieces of wood and make something not too detailed, but focused on proper shapes and edges. I really want to try and nail down the very basics of whittling before I get into anything too advanced. The kit I ordered has different types of knives and blocks to start off a few different projects
There are a few resources that I have found to guide my learning. These Include:
I hope you find this Learning Project fun and creative and I hope it inspires you to try something you’ve always wanted to!!
OOO wow! This looks really cool, definitely feeling more inspired to try something fun like that!
Wow, those wood sculptures look so cool! I wish you luck on your journey with learning how to whittle wood sculptures. I am excited to see what you will come up with at the end!!
This sounds like a great project! I liked the way you shared a lifelong love of building with us, I couldn’t help but think about my own son building with their Lego and making box forts. I can’t wait to see what you make!
This would be a lot of fun. I’m so excited to see some of your projects!! I just about cut my finger off in my grade 8 shop class so it will be good to learn through you.
