About Me

 Who am I?

Hi! My name is Reid Hengen. I was born in Regina, Saskatchewan and grew up in White City, Saskatchewan. I am currently 18 years old and am in my first year of University pursuing a dual degree in math and education. I have always thoroughly enjoyed math classes and always felt they were easy for me to understand. I often would help my other classmates in high school and I also really enjoyed helping them. I loved the feeling of knowing I helped another person succeed with my knowledge and this started my interest in being an educator.

My interests

Some other interests of mine are my family, friends, my cat, and music. Having my friends and family around me for support is a super important aspect in my life and they are my people to go to when I need to de-stress. I am a big animal lover so my cat is my big deal in my life and is always the best cuddler when I have had a long day. Lastly music is a incredibly helpful part of my life, it’s my own personal way to unwind and do something I enjoy by myself. Certain artists and their music have a way of connecting with me and I feel music impacts me on a different level.

Mental Heath Awareness

As someone who struggles with anxiety and depression I highly value mental heath awareness advocation and the battle to overcome the stigmas of mental heath. It is a big part of my life as I have to live with it everyday but I take it as a way to open myself to better connections with others who struggle with the same things. I hope in my future as an educator I can possibly run a mental heath awareness club in a school and also be that support for students if they need someone to talk to.

Truth and Reconciliation

My journey towards reconciliation has been a big part of my life recently as I have gotten to learn more about the Indigenous culture and history throughout this class and the media. I am continuing on this journey and learning to involve myself in the Indigenous culture and reflect on my privilege and understand what it means (this is discussed more in my Journey Towards Reconciliation section). I recently got to learn how to build a tipi with my work colleagues as a this competition that was being held. It was super interesting to learn about how to build the tipi and also the important significance behind every step of building a tipi.
