This week’s post was a fun one for me. I used to do html coding a long time ago when I used to build blogs. I spent a fair amount of time doing it, but then we had little ones, and all of a sudden I didn’t have time anymore. I actually went through   Code Academy, and  Hour of Code.  My ten year old checked them out with me.. She is interested in learning code, so we had lots of fun… Here she is below playing with hour of code.

Next I tried Scratch. My first attempt wasn’t great, but to be fair, it was midnight by then.  I tried making my name.

The next day when it was earlier and I was more awake, I tried again…

Enjoy the weirdness..

It didn’t actually take me that long…. I learned how to make different Sprites, and make them move… figured out how to create different backdrops. I added a music track from Incredibox.  My kids were wondering what was wrong with me by the time I finished with the video…

So, what does coding do for kids? Well.. First of all, it increases their problem solving fand analytical skills, and it is also beneficial for building math skills.

Here is a video that tells us a little about why coding is good for kids…

I think when I have more time, I will have to go back and play some more, so I can teach my future students how to code….
