Welcome to my blog! My name is Rowena Cuento, currently enrolled in the BEAD program at the University of Regina, focusing in the middle-years education. Coming from the Philippines, I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science, complemented by three education classes that opened doors for me to teach English proficiency exams like IELTS, TOEIC, and TOEFL to Korean students. This job helped me realize that teaching has always been my passion, prompting me to ponder why I hadn’t pursued an Education degree from the start. Yet, as the saying goes, it’s never too late to chase your dreams.
In 2012, my husband and I made a life-changing decision to immigrate to Canada, starting afresh in a land brimming with unfamiliarity. Rather than surrender to the challenges, I embraced them, exploring various job opportunities beyond my initial training. Despite facing barriers that delayed my teaching aspirations, I found contentment in working while managing a household. It wasn’t until I secured a position as an Educational Assistant in a Regina school that my passion for teaching reignited, leading me to realize that perhaps my dream was within reach all along.
The spark to pursue a formal teaching career was reignited by a colleague after eight years of being content in my role as an Educational Assistant. This ignited a process of gathering requirements, enduring waiting periods, and making tough decisions. Now, here I am, diligently working towards fulfilling my long-held dream of becoming an educator. Though the journey had its pauses and detours, the passion for teaching remained steadfast in my heart, moving me forward with renewed determination.
