My First Crochet Chain

This week I made an exciting step in my crochet journey—I created my first chain! I followed a video on YouTube that explained the process slowly, and I practiced along with it. At first, it was hard to hold the yarn and hook the right way, but after a few attempts I was able to make a small row of chains.

The stitches are not all even, but I feel really proud because this is the foundation of almost every crochet project. Learning to control the tension of the yarn was a challenge, but I noticed that with more practice my chains started to look smoother and more consistent. Making this chain gave me a sense of achievement—it feels like the first building block toward bigger projects.

I’m excited to keep moving forward. Next week, I will start learning the single crochet stitch, which will turn these simple chains into real fabric. I know it will take patience and practice, but I am motivated to keep going and see what I can create step by step.

Saskatchewan’s New Rule

At the start of the 2024–25 school year, Saskatchewan brought in new rules to limit cell phone use in classrooms. Students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 cannot use phones during class time, unless it is for learning or medical reasons. Teachers of high school students can also ask for special permission if a lesson really needs phones.

Benefits

Drawbacks

  • Teachers now have the job of making sure the rule is followed, which can be stressful.
  • Some students feel they are missing freedom or worry about not reaching family quickly.
  • Parents may not like losing instant contact with their children.
  • Schools must decide fairly who gets exceptions, which can be tricky.

Across Canada

Almost every province in Canada now has some kind of cell phone ban. Many parents and teachers support it because it reduces distractions. But some studies show that while bans help with focus, they don’t always improve grades on their own without other teaching supports.

My Reflection

I think the ban is a good step because it helps students stay focused and gives teachers more control in the classroom. At the same time, it is important to be fair and flexible, especially when students need phones for safety, learning, or personal reasons. Overall, the rule is useful, but it will only work well if teachers, parents, and students all work together.

 

 

 

“Keeping My Grandmother’s Legacy Alive: Learning Crochet”

My Major Project: Learning to Crochet
For my major project, I have chosen to learn crocheting with a crochet hook. I’ve always admired handmade blankets and scarves, and I want to develop the skills to make them myself. Crocheting feels calming and useful, and it also connects me to my grandmother, who was very skilled at this craft. I remember watching her create beautiful pieces as a child, but I never learned from her before she passed away. I regret missing that chance, so this project is also a way to honor her memory and keep her skill alive.

Why I Chose Crocheting and My First Steps
Crocheting appeals to me because it is creative, relaxing, and requires only a simple hook and yarn. My goals are to learn the basic stitches, practice with small swatches, and finish at least one project like a scarf or blanket. This week I gathered my materials—yarn, a crochet hook, and scissors—and practiced holding them properly. It felt awkward at first, but with practice it’s getting easier. I’m excited to start learning my first stitch next week and look forward to growing my skills week by week.

My Relationship with Social Media
I started using social media during my bachelor’s degree, first with Facebook and later with WhatsApp, Instagram, and YouTube. I use it for studying, entertainment, staying connected with family and friends, and keeping up with world events.

Positive Effects
Social media helps me learn new things, follow educational pages, and get ideas for my work. It also makes it easy to network, stay updated with news, and connect with people all around the world.

Negative Effects
At the same time, social media can be distracting and stressful if I spend too much time on it. I also think it is risky for children, as they can become addicted, and too much screen time may even harm their vision.

Final Thoughts
Overall, social media is a helpful tool when used wisely. I try to focus on the benefits and avoid the parts that bring negativity.
