This week I made an exciting step in my crochet journey—I created my first chain! I followed a video on YouTube that explained the process slowly, and I practiced along with it. At first, it was hard to hold the yarn and hook the right way, but after a few attempts I was able to make a small row of chains.
Here is the picture of my work:
The stitches are not all even, but I feel really proud because this is the foundation of almost every crochet project. Learning to control the tension of the yarn was a challenge, but I noticed that with more practice my chains started to look smoother and more consistent. Making this chain gave me a sense of achievement—it feels like the first building block toward bigger projects.
I’m excited to keep moving forward. Next week, I will start learning the single crochet stitch, which will turn these simple chains into real fabric. I know it will take patience and practice, but I am motivated to keep going and see what I can create step by step.
Hi Rupinder,
Congratulations on the success of crocheting your first chain- that is a huge accomplishment! My mother in-law loves and is an expert at crocheting. She has made us several cute items such as a curling rock toque for the Brier, a Christmas-themed gnome for our decorations, as well as a stuffed animal for our baby. Maybe one day as you continue to learn this skill you can work your way up to completing a big item or project such as those ideas. I look forward to watch your journey unfold and see what else you are able to crochet! Good luck, Rupinder!
Hi Jordan,
Thank you so much for your kind words! 🧶 Hearing about the amazing projects your mother-in-law has made is so inspiring — I hope to create something as special one day. I’m excited to keep learning and trying new projects, and your encouragement means a lot. Can’t wait to share my progress along the way!
Hey Roop,
That’s such a wonderful milestone! Making your first crochet chain is the true starting point, and you should be really proud of how far you’ve come already. Even stitches will come with practice, and it’s great that you’re already noticing improvements in your tension. Moving on to single crochet is an exciting next step—you’ll soon see your chains transform into fabric! Keep going, you’re building a solid foundation.
Hey Rupinder,
That’s amazing progress—congratulations on making your first chain! Even if the stitches aren’t perfectly even yet, it’s such an important first step and the foundation for everything else you’ll be creating. I love how you’re noticing the improvements already with practice. Can’t wait to see how your single crochet stitch turns out next week—it’s so exciting to watch your skills grow step by step!
Rupinder, I am so glad to see we have a common shared interest in crocheting as our major learning project. Also, congratulations on making your first chain! I can totally relate to the challenge of getting the yarn and hook to cooperate at first; it really does take some time to find that rhythm.
Even if the stitches aren’t perfectly even yet, they hold so much meaning because they represent your beginning. Every beautiful crochet piece starts with that first wobbly chain! I’m really excited to see your progress as you move into single crochet next week. Keep going—you’re doing amazing!
