The problem that you are facing within the classroom is the result of these students not getting the proper education throughout the years. Making it known that the way these students are reacting during this topic is the exact reason they need to be taught about treaty education. Treaty education is not just meant for Indigenous students, it is about looking and understanding Canadian history, about looking at all the injustices that accrued, how many of those treaty promises where actually broken, how treaties are the result of why many Indigenous communities are at extreme poverty, who has had a voice all along and who has been quieted, and most importantly it is about learning from it and not continuing the cycle of the past. I would even introduce the subject by going backwards a bit. What I mean by that is to start from the beginning, find out what they understand about treaties so far and then giving more information from there. Then challenge the by making them find out their own information and doing their own research then have them present it, because sometimes if they get to figure out the information on their own rather then have it be told to them they tend to take it more seriously.
By understanding that we are all treaty people is also understanding who’s land this really is, and if you are not Indigenous you are in fact a settler in this country even if you where born here. Taking the time to understand Indigenous peoples way of living is simply understanding each other and being able to set those stereotypes aside and getting to know them on a deeper level.
