Cyber Safety!! We Should all Know About it
The topic of cyber safety was actually never addressed (that I can remember) in school. My parents and friends’ parents would talk to us about how to stay safe online when we played games and such. My parents used the education in proper use approach and I do think that it has helped me to have a limited digital footprint. I think that the scare approach would be one of the worst ways to teach about cyber safety, to me I feel like it would make the bad choices more desirable. I know that when I was a child and I was told not to do something without a reason I would definitely go and do it. I think that with the rise of cyber crimes it’s so important that all people be made aware of how to identify and avoid being taken advantage of.
I am particularly aware of online banking and the sharing of information with corporations and websites online. I know that the main ideas regarding cyber safety from the videos we watched was about sextortion, but I think that it’s important to know that anyone can be vulnerable to other types of cyber crimes as well. Everyone should be diligent with their safety online no matter their age, gender, marital status or anything else.

Hi Sarah:
I don’t think we looked at cyber security or child safety on the internet either! And when some horror story came Oprah or something my mom would turn to me and say something like “you wouldn’t talk to strangers online, right?” Of course, I was totally doing that. Having boomer parents basically gave me unsupervised internet access, or so I thought, but the computer was in the family room. I can’t imagine how unsupervised students are now with the internet in their pockets. During preinternship last march students were talking about parental control apps on their phone and I thought that was crazy that grade 12s had that but now I’m starting to see the value of it. It probably wasn’t a good thing when I was exploring the internet without any framework for understanding interactions or security protocols then and it probably isn’t good for young people now. Especially since usage is up so significantly!
Also, you’re right that an all encompassing approach to security should be had that includes personal and private info protection. That is a great insight!
