Final Grade Calculator

Final Grade Calculator

I chose to learn about GoalSeek on Excel this week on a blog titled: How to use Goal Seek in Excel for What-If analysis , the author provided images and descriptions of how to determine a passing grade for an exam.

The problem is as follows: At the end of the course, a student takes 3 exams. The passing score is 70%. All the exams have the same weight, so the overall score is calculated by averaging the 3 scores. The student has already taken 2 out of 3 exams. The question is: What score does the student need to get for the third exam to pass the entire course?

I applied this information into my own excel document and found what another student would require on an exam to raise their grade to a 70%. This is essentially the math that rogerhub does for final exams.

The sheet although hard to see on here but the student has a 65% and a 69% to raise their average to a 70% they will need a 76% on the exam (if all exams are weighted the same). I feel like this would be a super useful skill for teachers, and students if they want to put in a bit more effort and have this data on a spreadsheet for everyone to access.

I definitely found this a difficult way to learn, I have found over the course of the past months that I learn best through verbal instruction, and having things modelled for me. This is probably my least favourite method of learning I’m glad I chose to do this as my last post.
