Learning to Make Sourdough Bread: A Journey of Patience and Joy
In a world of instant gratification, there’s something deeply rewarding about making sourdough bread. The process is as much about patience and learning as flour and water. As I embark on this journey, I hope it will be transformative—not just for my baking skills but for my outlook on time, effort, and the joy of creating something from scratch. I may even bring my sourdough to work! Stay tuned to see how that goes!…
Step 1: Naming my Starter
She shall be forever known as “Dough-na-tella”
Step 2: Creating Her
Though this is a controversial topic among many sourdough gurus, for the purpose of this class and to learn about how to create a sourdough starter I will be creating my own. I do however believe in the 5, 10, 15 and even 30 year old starters that may produce a superior product. But for this I will be creating her and feeding her myself. I will even be bringing her to work once I get the proper flour. I will be needing any type of unbleached flour to start off with. Equal parts Flour to filtered water. (the water must be filtered)
What is the name of your starter?
Not exactly sure yet but Im thinking something punny and cute! Stay tuned
Congrats on a fantastic choice!! Can’t wait to hear your excitement when your starter takes off, all bubbly and magical. You’ll have to let us know what you name it!
Oh I know!!!! I’m so excited for all of my supplies to arrive. I have ordered ALLLL the things to help make my life easier and I cannot wait! I haven’t decided on a name yet, but I will come up with something cute! Maybe something punny.
Shasta, I am already obsessed with Dough-na-tella. She is “her;” she is the moment. Ha ha ha! Looks delicious already and I really do mourn the fact that we can’t taste test anyone’s food-based projects.
I love this comment. She is a whole moment!
Great choice and I look forward to learning about your sourdough bread making process. Good Luck
I am excited to follow your journey! I was tempted to also make sourdough for this project because it would ensure I followed through on keeping it alive – so I hope that this is a successful journey for you! I have seen lots and lots of educational videos and follow along videos on TikTok in preparation of possibly making my own sourdough starter one day. Some honorable mentions would be, @wheatculture, @shebakesourdough and one that’s a little more fun, @okaycoolgigi.
I will definitely check those out! I also follow soooooo many amazing individuals who blog and create content on all things sour dough and I could get lost in my phone for hours just watching all the amazing creations these people make! This is one of my favourite pastimes. Maybe one day my dough will be half as great as theirs always turn out to be!
