Blog Seven: Treaty Education

Treaty Education is important for everyone to know no matter what many people believe or think. We need to taught it and need to learn about it because it is what makes our country the way it is. We all live and occupy Treaty land and are considered Treaty people no matter what anyone thinks and it is an important part of our History. Many people believe Treaty Education only needs to be taught to those of the Indigenous communities and culture as it is part of their heritage but we all need to learn about it because it is a vital part of Canadian History although not all positive it is important. However, they often like I stated before target it at Indigenous people and only see it as something thy need to learn and be taught even though they probably already have learned about it. Like in society if one says they are learning about Treaty Education those around them question why and say we do not need to learn about it and should be taught more important things such as math and science or any other subject area. Our world today has made it this way and has a view of it only being important for Indigenous people to learn about it but in reality everyone needs to learn about Treaty Education in one way or another in their life time as it is a part of us as we are all Treaty people whether we acknowledge it or not.

First Nations people want to be understood and treated like equals and not have the stereotyping and racist comments that they receive happen just about everyday. They want to be able to live judgement free lives and want people to realize that racism and stereotyping are still around and want their voices to be heard and Treaty Education or even a class such as Native Studies can help open people eyes to the subject and they can see for themselves what they go through on a daily basis and maybe things can change. In my eye’s things need to change and everyone needs to stop being filled with hate and start treating everyone with respect. We as a country and individual people need to acknowledge that we all have to live together and we have always had to from the first time that the Europeans stepped on this land and signed treaties and created promises to share the land equally and provide them with land to live. I personally feel that Treaty Education should be taught in schools and every classroom as it is a vital part of our History and liked stated previously and told in class even though we do not feel comfortable with it or want to acknowledge it we are all Treaty people and need to be educated on the topic.
