  • Provide a brief summary of your understanding of the three learning theories introduced in the readings (behaviourism, cognitivism, and constructivism). How can you connect these learning theories with the models of curriculum (product, process, and praxis in particular) that we have discussed? What learning theories did you see reflected in your own schooling experiences?

“With knowledge of alternative theoretical approaches, teachers and instructors are in a better position to choose how to approach their teaching in ways that will best fit the perceived needs of their students, within the many different learning contexts that teachers and instructors face”

The behaviourism theory is based on a reward and punishment aspect of teaching. For example, many children are taught at home if they tell the truth they will be praised whereas if they lie they will be punished. This becomes relevant in the classroom as we too as teachers use this concept of learning behaviour. For example, when the students complete their work they are rewarded with praise or an object such as a sticker. To enforce good behaviour in the classroom it is essential that we acknowledge all types of behaviour and reward the positives and punish the negatives. The second theory of cognitivism focuses on the mental process of the students while learning new information. This is how the child comprehends and thinks about the material. The mental aspect of learning. How the student goes from learning the material to comprehending it. Lastly, constructivism is mainly based on the social aspect of one’s life or the environmental influences. This theory tries to make sense of past experiences which lead them to knowledge in the future. Its almost as if it becomes a personal approach to the learning. Thus ll these learning approaches are used in the classroom for multiple aspects of teachings.
