What do you want to be when you grow up? This question is always asked, and my answer is always the same: a teacher. If I were Eight, my reasoning for why I want to become an educator would be much different than it is currently. Growing up I was always a very optimistic and extroverted child. I continuously looked up to the older people in my life. I believe the aspects in my life that shaped me today would include my family and friends, education and teachers, and activities and interests. These key influencers in my life all helped me on my journey to becoming an educator.

As a child, I grew up in a wealthy community with loving parents. Growing up in these conditions has built my appreciation for all life has to offer. My parents are the people I respect the most. They work their hardest to provide my brother and I with the best lifestyle possible and support us in every way. I believe the people who know us the best in our young years are our parents because they watch us grow up and shape the people we have become today. Two things they always told me was, to be myself and not change for anyone, and do what you love. Due to their encouraging words of wisdom, I became an extrovert. I live my life by not caring what others think about me and focus on what I think of myself. When telling my family I wanted to become an educator they were super excited because they notice how good I am with kids. My mom is the reason for my love for children. She always wanted to be an educator growing up but she did not have the opportunities that I have today. Watching the way she was with children growing up, showed me how loving and caring children can be towards you. This truly inspired my love for children.

Throughout your young life, you spend more than half of your time growing up in school. With spending this much time in school you adapt and grow from the things you learn and see every day. Being taught in a Canadian school you learn many different ideas than you would learn in say, an American school. As Canadians, we learned in depth about indigenous peoples. Learning about this culture in depth has given me respect and care for indigenous peoples as well as our elders. It also allows me to be extremely grateful to live in this amazing country. Another aspect I adapted to growing up was the education and teachers that helped me increase my understanding of all I have learned. As a child, I would always look up to my educators. I thought these educators knew everything there is to know about life. They made me want to become an educator because they lead me to want to inspire future young minds as well as shaping the future generation to be successful.

The last key influence that shaped me today is the activities and interests I’ve come to enjoy. As a child, I always loved to try new things and learn new sports. Growing up I participated in sports such as hockey, gymnastics, dance, soccer, volleyball, and many more. From taking part in these activities I gained a new personality trait in each one. In hockey, I learn that aggressiveness builds self-esteem. Gymnastics created my bravery when I went to try a new skill. From dance, I gained my confidence by allowing myself to let loose. Soccer showed me the importance of equality when none of the boys would pass me the ball. Finally, in volleyball, I found my lifelong friends and tested my mental health. Each of these sports created the person I am today and taught me valuable life lessons along the way. Building my self-esteem, gaining confidence, knowing the importance of equality, and enhancing my mental health are all great traits to have when becoming an educator.

Overall, each of these past events has somehow played an important role in my journey to become an educator. I am so incredibly grateful to have amazing friends and family, great education and teachers, and the opportunity to explore activities and interests. Growing up with these amazing influencers in my life has shaped my personality and my drive to want to become an educator. If my personality traits were different I would not be the person I am today. I am excited to start my journey on becoming an educator and looking forward to learning and adapting to new teachings in the future.
