I worry about teens that are bombarded with these trends, and ranking people based on followers, views and likes. I agree that they are feeling as if they are being forced to choose, or conform to certain labels. for example: What if they just aren’t interested in the other gender right now? or yet? Does that mean they have to choose what gender they are interested in RIGHT NOW? Are they feeling pressured to do so? It makes me worry that they don’t have time to “be kids” and just figure themselves out without the pressure to fit those labels. I am an ally of the LGBTQ2 community, and wholeheartedly support them at all ages, but I just don’t like that kids feel they have to choose a label.

First of all, I want to thank you for including images alongside the trends you mentioned because I haven’t heard of a single one of them and felt myself getting confused just reading them. If they were made up I would’ve had no idea.
I think a difficult part in all of this is that our own identities are commonly developed with outside influence. We’ll see somebody doing something, dressing a certain way, or just the way they act, and then we’ll make the decision of whether we want to adopt that into our personality. But that’s where your point at the end “Is this really me, or just something that’s trending?” is most challenging. The pressure for students to fit in can often trump the importance of staying true to who they are. I’d guess most of us can say that we did at least one thing as teenagers not because it’s what we wanted to do, but it’s because we thought it would help us fit in. The fact that teenagers nowadays have to experience that situation on a regular basis through rapidly changing trends feels incredibly harmful towards the development of their personal identity.

As much as I have thought that Social Media does not influence me I am beginning to realize that I am. I see young teachers and how they dress and feel I should change my style to be more trendy. I have watched shows because someone says they are so good, and I want to be a part of the conversation. I use different social media platforms to stay informed about what is in and out. If I, as a 40-year-old woman, am so influenced by this, how is it affecting our teens, whose brains have not fully developed and are easily influenced by managing all of this? How can we help our youth see that not everything they see online is accurate and trustworthy? As educators, we need to start educating our youth on dissecting what they are watching, listening to and seeing.

Social media is a great influencer and everybody wants to grow their presence on it one way or the other. Despite the positive side of social media, I feel it has caused more harm than good, especially to teenagers. On second thought, I think the influence of social media also comes with age and profession. However, I feel there is a need for parents and educators to start educating kids from the age of 7/8 about the kind of content they should and should not be exposed to on these platforms.
