Hello! My name is Dre. I am originally from Cowessess First Nation. I currently live in Regina and I am a university student.

I’m in my fourth-year in the Indigenous education program at the First Nations University of Canada where I am studying to become an elementary school teacher. I chose this program because as a Cree woman, reconnecting with my culture has been integral to my identity. Growing up Indigenous in a colonial society and education system is challenging, and I hope to be a role model for Indigenous students and do my part to keep our cultures and languages thriving.

My experience with the Indigenous education program has been life-changing.  It emphasizes integrating Indigenous culture and knowledge into our education systems. Throughout my university career, I have learned so much about various Indigenous histories, languages, beliefs, and teaching philosophies. As I near the end of my degree, I’m excited to implement these teachings in my future classrooms. I believe that it’s so important for educators to integrate knowledge from various Indigenous cultures. This way, we can uplift our Indigenous students by creating a world that they are a part of. After all, it’s our duty as educators to play an active role in reconciliation.
