Learning on TikTok?!

TikTok is often seen as a platform for entertainment, but it can actually be a great tool for learning in the classroom. With its short-form videos, creative editing features, and vast library of user-generated content, TikTok gives students a fun way to explore new ideas and share their learning. Whether mini-lessons and tutorials to student-created projects and reflections, the app can make learning more interactive and exciting. In this review, I will explore how TikTok can be used for educational purposes, its benefits and challenges, and how it can support student engagement and creativity in the classroom

Overview

I would say that TikTok is fairly user-friendly. If you feel lost, there are tons of tutorials on how to use TikTok out there. Essentially, if you want to create a basic TikTok, you can follow these steps:

  • download the app
  • create a TikTok account
  • press the (+) sign in the middle of your screen
  • record a video on the app, or upload a video from your device (you can keep the original audio from your video or mute it)
  • add music by clicking “add sound” at the top of your screen
  • add a voiceover (if you want)
  • cut, edit, add transitions, have fun!

This is a very simple overview of how to use the app; there are so many things you can do on TikTok. Such as commenting on videos, saving and liking videos, following other content creators, and collaborating with other users.

How I would use TikTok in the Classroom

Overall, I would say that TikTok is an efficient tool to use for learning in the classroom.  I can think of many ways to utilize it to assess and evaluate student learning. TikTok can be used as a tool to display:

  • portfolios
  • summary of learning
  • presentations
  • role-playing
  • groupwork and collaboration projects
  • vlogs
  • tutorials

These are some examples of different ways to assess students, in a way that is fun and engaging for them!

The SAMR Model

When it comes to the SAMR model, I would say that TikTok falls somewhere in between augmentation and modification. This app can be classified under the augmentation category because TikTok supports interactive elements such as commenting, and sharing. To put it another way, the app can be used to create a community of learning in the classroom- something you wouldn’t get by simply handing in a paper assignment. I believe the app also falls under the modification category of the SAMR model because it allows students to express themselves in a way that they wouldn’t be able to using traditional learning tools such as PowerPoint, for example. Overall, TikTok enhances the learning experience by not only making content more interactive but also by transforming the way students engage with and showcase their understanding of a topic.

Hey Dre! I also used TikTok and found it super easy! Some aspects can be overwhelming but sometimes keeping it simple without crazy editing is the way to go! I really like your ideas for how students can use TikTok, especially group projects. I had the thought on a discussion forum where one person could make a TikTok and then the next could stitch it and on and on.

Hey! I really enjoyed reading about how you used TikTok in an educational way! I usually just scroll through it mindlessly before bed (which definitely cuts into my sleep), so it was refreshing to see how you turned it into a learning tool. I also loved how you explained not only how you used it but also how it could be applied in your future classroom. This was really well done, thanks for sharing!
