Since starting a bucket hat, I’ve learned that it’s important to keep track of how many stitches and rows you complete as you go along. So, for this week’s learning post, I decided to try a free app I found called Easy Knitty. This app is used for counting rows and/or stitches when crocheting or knitting. Other features of the app include the ability to create multiple projects, and a stopwatch feature to see how much time you’ve spent on a project. Until now, I have been tallying my rows on scrap paper, or even my hand so I don’t forget. Is the app a better option? Here’s my thoughts and experience!
Easy Installation
The app was easy to download and is user-friendly. The design is very minimalistic and straightforward. As soon as you open the app you can see that you simply press the Create a project button (see image on left). This is where I added my bucket hat project. Within that project, you have to ability to create multiple parts. In my case, I would add the top of the hat, the sides, and the brim (see image on right). Unfortunately, I found if you want to add more than two elements to your project, you need to pay $2.79 for the premium app. It’s an affordable price, but I won’t be purchasing it for now. After all, I can seemingly achieve the same goal with a pen and paper.
Good App for Logging Projects
While all the app features are not free, I appreciate the practicality of having everything for your crocheting projects in one place. When you create a project, you can include all the information needed in case you’d like to revisit it at some point. For example, needle size, yarn details, and dye lot. I was not familiar with what a dye lot was, or why I would want to note it. I found this article that explains what a dye lot is and why it matters. Essentially, when yarns are made at different times they may vary in color, which could affect the overall appearance of your project. Overall, I would say that if you want all your information stored in one place, then this app would be worth a few dollars.
Learning Project Update!
I would say that the app supported me in learning more about yarn, but I don’t mind using a pen and paper to record this information. Other than that, I’ve completed the sides of my practice bucket hat! Next learning project post I hope to have the brim completed, and I would like to learn more from other crocheting blogs. Particularly, I want to learn more about yarn tension, and how to improve it.

The hat looks so good! And that app looks really handy for keeping track of everything. I can’t imagine trying to keep up with jotting down everything on paper!

That is so amazing! I could never figure out how to do something in a hat shape when I started knitting. I can’t wait to see how this turns out.

Hi Chandre, Thanks for sharing this app and I love you highlighted the app’s organizational benefits while also noting the limitations, like the cost for additional features. It’s exciting to see your progress on the bucket hat using this app. I’m looking forward to learning more about your experience with app.
