Get a Grip!

Last week I decided to explore different ways to grip the golf club. Since I am a beginner holding a club in my hand feels unnatural anyway I hold it. I looked up many different type such as:

The Traditional

Interlocking

Vardon (overlapping)

The baseball

I did not like the baseball grip as I felt I was moving my wrist to much when I swing which causes me to top the ball. I am in between the interlocking and Vardon grips as these feel the most comfortable when swinging and I have less mobility of my wrist which benefits my game. I did need to find videos explaining these grips which are hyperlinked on each name because simply looking at a photo wasn’t enough for me to understand.

  1. Hey Harli,
This is amazing information. I wasn’t aware of the multiple ways to hold a golf club. Thanks for sharing this information. I hold my clubs the traditional way, but moving forward now that I have this information maybe I will try out some of the other options and see if I like one of them better!

  2. Hello!
I really enjoyed reading your post this week! I totally relate to how unnatural holding a golf club can feel at first — it’s such a specific skill that takes time to feel even remotely comfortable. I think it’s great that you explored multiple grips and took the time to reflect on how each one impacted your swing.

I especially liked how you mentioned needing videos rather than just photos — I’m the same way! Watching someone actually demonstrate the grip helps me understand the feel and mechanics so much better than a still image ever could.

It’s awesome that you’re narrowing in on what works best for you. Between the interlocking and Vardon, you’re already figuring out how to limit wrist movement and gain more control — that’s a big win as a beginner! Keep experimenting and trusting what feels best in your swing. Looking forward to seeing how it helps your game in the coming weeks!

  3. Hi Harli!
This is so helpful! As a very occasional golfer, I’ve never enjoyed going very much because I could never figure out how to hold the club correctly. I’ll definitely remember and try these out the next time I go. I’m glad you were able to find a couple grips that were comfortable!

    Thanks for sharing!
    Heidi
