There are several ways in which hip hop can be used as a tool to promote social justice and and youth activism in the classroom. For one, music is a strong medium used by artists to emphasize a specific platform and explain certain topics in a more poetic manner. The majority of students listen to music everyday, and have access to songs that speak on such topics both in and out of the classroom setting. Hip hop expresses criticism of injustice in the world by using a poetic medium, ultimately drawing in students to discuss such issues themselves.

The relationship between hip hop culture and the development of critical consciousness amongst students is strong and pertinent. Hip hop culture is known to have had a large impact on pop culture as a whole, of which students participate in regularly. This allows for a bridge to form between hip hop and students, not only as a means of enjoying music for fun, but also a means of reflection for students in terms of their individual beliefs and values. hip hop often illustrates opinions and views of those who have either been oppressed or speak for those who have been oppressed. These views may not always be the experiences of students, which allows for students to learn and gain new perspectives through opinions and experiences stressed in hip hop. With this in mind, it becomes clear to see how students are able to develop their critical consciousness’ in a way that is relevant and on par with subjects being discussed in the world at the moment. one must only glance at America in 2020 to witness all of the ways in which predominantly white students were able to develop critically in terms of understanding the BLM movement and everything it stands for. This is largely in part due to the ways in which hip hop, and hip hop artists, tied into the African-American and BIPOC communities.
