Who am I?
My name is Thuraya Brennan and I am originally from Craven, Saskatchewan. I moved around a lot when I was a child, and began my educational journey in Air Ronge, Saskatchewan. I have always had a fond love for education, however it wasn’t until I was fifteen years old and became a camp councillor that my love for educating children became a passion. My time as a camp councillor truly fostered my love for children, and it is largely due to this experience that I wish to be a teacher in the future.
My education has always been my foundation, regardless of where I was in the world and my age. It has been my safe space and a continued place for growth, and I hope to one day inspire my students the way that my previous and current educators have inspired me.
In terms of my path as an educator, I want to teach English and Social Studies at a high school level. I have always had a strong appreciation for English, beginning with my several years as a Battle of the Books member in elementary school to editing my friends papers for their English classes while studying as an Exchange Student in Sweden. English has always been something I could come to, whether it be reading or editing or joking about my brother’s improper use of “they’re”, “there”, or “their”.
Additionally, Social Studies has been a constant interest of mine for as long as I can remember. From current events to the stories of monarchs, such as my personal favourite Queen Mary I of Scotland, I have always adored the subject of Social Studies in its entirety. It grew as an exponential interest of mine while I was studying abroad, mainly due to the international culture that I was encompassed by. My time as a member of the European Youth Parliament only furthered my interest in the subject, as I worked on boards surrounding LGBTQ+ rights across the continental European Union, as well as different forms of international trade and evaluating various trading partners for the EU as a whole. I also strongly adore the historic aspect of Social Studies as well, for I firmly believe that we must learn from and reflect upon the actions of the past so we can prevent them from repeating in the future.
Outside of my education, I love spending time outdoors, specifically with my amazing dogs, cats, and horses. Hiking in the moments and swimming, quite frankly anywhere, has always been a favourite past time of mine, and I cannot wait to travel again to explore the outdoors some more. I also enjoy baking and reading, and I am beyond excited for the day when I can discuss some of my favourite books with my students!
