Exploring the Art of Potted Flower Gardening: Tips for Success

June 17, 2024 3 By Brodie Ziegler

In today’s blog post, I am going to share my experience of exploring the wonderful world of planting potted flowers and the best ways to maintain them. Flowers are a wonderful way to keep your space vibrant and thriving! 🙂

Choosing the Right Pot & Soil

The first step I took was selecting the right pot. This is essential for a few reasons:

  • Size: You have to make sure that the pot is large enough to accommodate the plant’s root system. If the pot is too small it may stunt the growth of the plants you are trying to grow.
  • Drainage: This is one of the most crucial things. Drainage holes help prevent water from pooling at the bottom. Without drainage holes, your plants may end up getting root rot.
  • Material: There are so many different types of pots including plastic, clay, ceramic and metal. Each one of these types of pots have pros and cons. I chose to work with a plastic pot as it is lightweight and makes it easier to move and handle. I also learned that plastic pots retain moisture better which reduces the amount of watering I will have to do!

My next step was to learn a little bit about the right soil mix. Here are some of the tips I learned:

  • Potting Mix: I honestly did not know that potting mix was so crucial for the growth of your flowers/plants. Potting mixes are formulated to provide better aeration and drainage, which are both vital for plotted plants.
  • Nutrients: Making sure your flowers have enough nutrients is also a very important step. I bought some Miracle-Gro to add to my watering can to help my flowers grow!

Planting My Flowers!

Now that I learned about the pots and soil, it was time to dive into planting my flowers.

Step 1: My first step was to fill my pot full with potting mix.

Step 2: Next, I removed the petunia’s I bought out from its nursey container and loosened the roots as they were tightly bound.

Step 3: I then placed the plant I bought in the center of the pot. After I had that placed I added the petunia’s around it. It is good to remember that you should plant your flowers the same depth as it was in the nursery container.

Step 4: After that, I filled in the pot and added soil around the plants, pressing it down lightly to eliminate any air pockets.

Step 5: Finally, I gave my flowers a good water and made sure to add a little bit of Miracle-Gro to my watering can!

Reflection of My New Learnings

For this post, I explored a new online resource to broaden my understanding of potted flower gardening. The source I discovered is called Gardenista, which is a site that gave many gardening tips and ideas. The most interesting things I found was the valuable insights on pot selection and soil composition that I never really considered when thinking about planting flowers.

The importance of learning from different resources is crucial as it gave me new perspectives on how to enhance my gardening knowledge. Gardenista’s articles were well-researched and presented tips that I found so useful to my own gardening practice!
