Becoming A Teacher

To be professional is to act at all times in a manner that is worthy of the public trust, to respect the profession and employers/board members and students, to be just and caring, to support and encourage each individual student in obtaining their best selves in all aspects, to always put the students education first, and to reflect on yourself and your strategies as a teacher. Although I am not teaching 24 hours a day, I am still a teacher, so I have to act in a way that I can obtain the public trust and respect of the community, education system, colleagues, and students.

The focus of the 2025 Direction document is to make education accessible for all, engaging, inclusive and of the highest quality possible. The last few words of the 2025 vision really stuck out to me and gave me hope. It says, “quality public education for the benefit of all students and society”. I interpret this as not only meaning society in the present but the future of our society, providing quality education so that as our students graduate and enter society as adults they can contribute to and live in society in a positive and healthy way. This gives me hope for the future of our world. Something that surprised me was that although the STF Teachers Professionalism document talked about diversity in the classroom there was not as much about inclusivity as I thought there was going to be.

Something that excites me about becoming a teacher is being able to provide my future students with the knowledge and experiences that many others were not provided throughout school. I am excited to bring my educational philosophy into the education system/classroom. Most of all I am excited for the journey of growing and learning as a teacher for the better of the students.
