Mama Is Mad At Me!

FINALLY! I hit a breakthrough and decided with my finished pink rectangle, and I made a pot holder… well, half of it. So, I accidentally burnt the side of my mom’s counter (she was unhappy) with a pot when making food. So, I think a pot holder would be sufficient to have beside the stove at my apartment to make sure I do not damage the counters.

Here are some of the steps that I took pictures of this week:

  • Another step that I made while making my second part of the pot holder

    Second Step

  • Green crocheting second half of my pot holder

    First Step

  • The third step of my pot holder

    Third Step

  • Fourth Step

Well, this week, I decided to try looking at pictures and small videos to help remind me of the steps, which I often forget when I start crocheting. It seems as though my mind goes blank, and I forget what I have learned, I think I am relying on YouTube videos too much to remind me of the steps. Maybe I need to practice more or just sit and struggle a little bit before running to something that is comfortable for me. So, instead of a full-blown video, I found this great article that has little snippets of videos and some pictures that helped jog my memory.

Now, to finish off this product, I have to stitch it together… Now, this will hopefully go smoothly (fingers crossed). Next week I will finally have my first finished product! After finishing this, I want to make a cute pumpkin. Since I have been seeing so many videos on TikTok for Halloween, I just have to try it.

You may be wondering why I used green with a variety of pink colours… Here are my reasons why:

  • I only had the green and pink yarn (as I did not want to buy so many yarns and not use them)
  • I thought of using the pink again but I got bored of the colour
  • Lastly, I was too lazy to go out and buy something that would match the pink.

  1. Hi Alyssa,
I absolutely agree that practice is crucial. While I’m not able to draw or sketch the same pattern without referring to YouTube tutorial videos, I believe that with continued effort, I can improve and eventually achieve that skill.

  2. It’s awesome that you started with something small like a potholder, I’m sure you have a great sense of accomplishment (and I’m sure your mom is happy that you won’t burn her counter anymore lol). After your pumpkin are you going to attempt a larger project (blanket, toque, sweater)? On Instagram I see people making temperature blankets (a different colour row for each day based on the temperature) which is interesting, but you’d be working on that thing for a very long time! Good luck on your next project!

  3. Hey! Crocheting definitely gets easier with practise. I have been crocheting for a little over a year (I learnt how for a learning project in a different class a couple semesters ago) and I still often have to remind myself which stitch is which. It gets even more tricky when you have to switch stitches throughout your project. From what I learnt, it is really easy to overestimate the difficulty of a project. Be careful with a project like a pumpkin it can be really tricky – I would recommended getting a stitch counter or a stitch marker to help you stay on track with the pattern. Or else I would recommend starting with something a little easier like a small baby blanket that has a couple different stitches. If you do try the pumpkin good luck! and I can’t wait to see your results!
