Hey Everyone! My name is Amber Landels and I live in Yorkton, SK where I was born and raised. This is my second time being in University. My first time was right after high school and I got my Agribusiness Diploma from the University of Saskatchewan. After working in the industry for quite a few years I decided it was time for a change and I got a job at an elementary school in Yorkton as an Admin Assistant. At this job I also got the opportunity to be an Educational Assistant and temporarily the school Librarian. It is through this experience that I was inspired by my coworkers and I discovered how much I wanted to become a teacher. That is the road that led me to where I am now in the Early Years Education program at the University of Regina. I am in my second year of taking online classes and I enjoy the flexibility it gives me to remain living in Yorkton and working at the elementary school.
My boyfriend and I have two fur babies, Frankie (Labradoodle) and Sasha (Staffy Mix). They dominate most of our free time with walks and doggy play dates with their friends. In my spare time I do enjoy reading and playing games with family and friends.
Working in an elementary school has given me some experience with educational technology but I would say I still have lots to learn. A lot of the educational technology I have come across has provided me with awareness but hasn’t necessarily provided me with opportunities to use it. I look forward to learning more in this class!
I will admit that I have very minimal exposure to blogs, as I hadn’t read many blogs before this class and never had my own. I will also admit that my first thoughts about it were ones of reluctantly, as it is something new and is outside my comfort zone. Although, I reminded myself that what lies on the other side of your comfort zone is growth. One day when I am an educator, I am going to be asking my students to step outside their comfort zone with various assignments and I need to be willing to do the same. I think I might come to enjoy blogging as it is a more informal way of communicating information. It will be a refreshing break from the usual formal writing we do in our classes. Either way it is a new experience and I am ready to give it a chance! Thanks for joining me on this journey!
Hi Amber! It is nice to meet you! I loved that you included your dogs in your post!! It made me smile! My boyfriend and I have a golden doodle (Ivy) who takes up majority of our time as well.
I also admire how you ended up in the education program! I think figuring out your passion for teaching, from firsthand experience, is such an authentic place to start! I think you will make a great teacher.
I really loved reading your blog post and I would have never guessed it was something you were reluctant about doing at first! I too enjoy writing in an informal way and you reminded me how blogs are a great space to do so!
