This week I tried my hands on a Fish curry. It is a flavorful, delicious and aromatic recipe. There are countless ways to make fish curry around the world. In some places people may use different ingredients, species and coconut milk to make the curry which can enhance the texture, flavor and the taste of recipe. Every recipe is unique and influenced by the local food culture and ingredients. Now back to focus on recipe that I cooked. Every time whenever I cook for first time, it is always a difficult choice for me to choose and make a nice recipe. Because, I do not belong to coastal areas so I do not have much knowledge about the seafood. This time I discussed with my roommate who comes from costal area of India i.e. Chennai to get more knowledge and she told me in her house her mother basically use Basa fish for this dish but if we do not get it then substitute it with any local variety available. She also helped me as an instructor during the preparation. In addition, I watch several You Tube videos to get more information about this recipe. Preparation journey.
Fish.
Luckily, I got Basa fish on Canadian super store. So I used Basa fish for the dish. The article Is Basa fish healthy? Nutrition, benefits and dangers describes the healthy benefits of fish. It has rich sources of omega 3, protein and it reduces the chances of heart attack.
Species
I used red chili powder, coriander powder, salt, dry mango powder, garam masala and black salt.
Marinating
Step 1:- Mix all dry species along with ginger and garlic past and apply on fish evenly. After the coating and rest on the marinated fish almost 15 minutes.
Step 2:- after 15 minutes fish is ready for shallow fry. Fry until it cook.
Curry making
Ingredients: I used fine chopped red onion, green chilies, ginger and garlic tomato (puree), and mustard oil for cooking and fresh green coriander for garnishing.
Method
First heat a cooking oil and add cumin seeds after that add chopped ginger, garlic and green chilies and cooked around 1 minutes than add fine chopped onions and cooked until it turns brown. Then add tomato puree and some dry species like red chili powder, turmeric, salt as taste. Remember on this stage we already put on species on fish so we can used according to taste and requirement. When mixture is cooked perfectly (translucent and brown) add fried fish and little bit of a water and cook approximately for 10 minutes on medium heat, covered. After 10 minutes the delicious fish curry is ready and then garnish with the coriander leaves. This delicious recipe can be served with plain boiled rice.
I hope you try and enjoy at your home.
I have enjoyed reading your recipes! You are so passionate about the meals that you prepare 🙂
I don’t do a lot of cooking with meat myself but do you think this recipe would work with other types of meat or is this particular spice blend best for fish?
hello Babbandeep!
You did amazing in exploring this recipe. I am very glad you did not limit yourself because you do not know much about seafoods. You asked a friend and there was a way out. this is an inspiration to always ask for help when we need it.
i have not heard or seen of black salt before.. I was like wow, we have something like black salt. this is an enlightening to me. i loved your visual representations too
I would like to know how long you took in preparing the fish curry?
This looks amazing! I can relate to the inexperience with seafood. That is great you are challenging yourself. One of the challenges I find with being on the prairies is finding good quality ingredients from the sea. Do you find it challenging to find quality fish/seafood?
