Tech in My Life: A Balancing Act

Technology has become a big part of my daily routine and it is kind of mindblowing to think about how much it influences everything I do. It goes from staying productive to unwinding at the end of day. As a student and new substitute teacher, I am juggling tech for both academic/work and personal enjoyment, so let’s dive into how it all fits into my day!

Favorite Websites, Apps, and Online Platforms

When it comes to my academic life, I am constantly using platforms like Google Drive. This app is a lifesaver for organizing notes and collaborating on group projects. For work, I rely heavily on Outlook email to stay connected with colleagues and parents. It’s where I manage communications and keep everything organized—definitely a must-have for my day-to-day work life.

For social and leisure, apps like Instagram and Tik Tok are where I tend to spend most of my time. Whether it’s catching up on friends’ posts or checking out tips for my decorative cake journey, I’ll admit—these apps are major distractions when I’m trying to focus. But hey, they help me stay connected to my creative side!

Staying Organized & Productive with Digital Tools

I rely heavily on my digital calendar (Google Calendar, to be exact!) to keep track of deadlines, appointments, and class/work schedules. Setting up reminders and color-coding helps me stay on top of everything, and it’s honestly the most efficient way to manage my day. You can also make checklists in Google Calendar, it is soooo helpful! It’s a visual checklist that feels incredibly satisfying to tick off!

Here is an article I read that is a complete guide to using Google Calendar and it is super helpful!

Tech Distractions: The Struggle is Real

I won’t lie—apps like TikTok and Instagram are my biggest distractions. I get sucked into watching videos for “just five minutes” that end up turning into a rabbit hole of endless scrolling. My productivity? Out the window! To minimize this, I’ve started using my app limits on my iphone and it allows me to set a time limit for each app daily. I also make sure to turn off notifications (put my Iphone on Do Not Disturb) while working or doing school so I’m not tempted to check my phone every few minutes.

Balancing Screen Time with Self-Care

Finding balance between screen time and well-being is something I’ve had to be really intentional about. When I feel like I’ve been staring at screens too long, I’ll take a break and do something non-tech related, like going for a walk, yoga, or even reading a physical book (yes, those still exist!). I’ve also set boundaries by establishing “tech-free” times in my day, such as during meals or before bed. It’s my way of making sure I’m taking care of my mind and body away from screens. It also just gives you the chance to slow down and be present in the moment.

Technology is such a huge part of my life, both academically and personally, but I’ve found that creating boundaries and using tools intentionally helps me strike that perfect balance. How do you all balance your screen time? Let me know in the comments—maybe we can all swap tips and tricks!

This picture is taken at SESSION studio in Regina. I love going there to work out. I HIGHLY recommend it!! SESSION makes fitness fun and effective with music-driven, full-body workouts for all levels. Their inclusive and body-positive community turns movement into an amazing form of self-care.

  1. I use a lot of the same apps and tools for productivity as you and also find them really helpful! I also use time limits on apps like social media, but often find myself turning it off when it gives me the notification that I’ve reached my limit. Also, Session is so great for self care and mental health! I love going there and am having so much fun using their online platform for my learning project. Maybe see you there again sometime!

  2. The Google calendar is nice to see, I like how you linked a guide to it as well, I definitely gonna try that out as I currently use just my Apple one but maybe I’ll learn some things I can integrate into mine.
