Creating a Cake Decorating Video with CapCut

For my 9th learning project post, I decided to take my learning in a new direction not just with cake decorating but also with video editing! Since I’ve been sharing my cake decorating journey, I thought it would be fun to create a TikTok video showing the process. To do this, I used CapCut. It is a video editing app that’s popular for making short and engaging videos.

Trying Out CapCut for the First Time

I had never used CapCut before, so this was a new learning experience for me. The app is pretty beginner friendly, but I still had to figure out how to use its different tools. Here’s how I edited my TikTok video:

Steps to Using CapCut

  • Importing Clips – I recorded different stages of my cake decorating process and uploaded them into CapCut. The app automatically arranged them in a timeline.
  • Trimming & Splitting – To keep my video short and engaging, I trimmed unnecessary parts and split longer clips into shorter sections. This was so easy to do!! You just clicked the video you wanted to trim and you just dragged it to shorten the ending or the beginning.

  • Adjusting Speed – I sped up some clips to match the sped up style of TikTok videos. This was super helpful because some of the videos were super long so speeding them up helped!

  • Music & Sound (voice over) – I first muted all my clips. You can click on button and it mutes all your clips. I know that TikTok videos are more fun with music, so I added a background song that fit the vibe of my video. It was called “Positive VIbes”. I also added a voice over. It was a step by step of what I was doing in each clip. This was super easy to record right on my IPhone.

  • Exporting & Uploading – Once I was happy with the final edit, I exported the video and uploaded it to TikTok! This was super easy, you just click export and then it gives you an option to share on TikTok.

What I Learned from This Experience

  • CapCut is a great beginner-friendly tool – It was easy to figure out and navigate, even though I had never used it before.
  • Editing takes time but makes a big difference – A well-edited video is way more engaging than just uploading raw clips. CapCut was useful and I am happy with the video.
  • Little details matter – Adding music and a voice over and trimming/speeding up the videos made my video much more fun to watch.

Final Thoughts

This was such a fun way to combine my cake decorating skills with a new learning experience in video editing. Now that I know how to use CapCut, I can make more creative TikTok videos to share my projects! I also did prefer CapCut over Canva. I used Canva earlier in the semester and it was easy but I think CapCut was much more user friendly for beginners.

I uploaded my Tik Tok to Youtube so it would be easier to watch for everyone!

  1. I have never used CapCut before but I did come across it a few weeks ago when creating a video for my learning project. I downloaded the app but never tried it, as I ended editing in TikTok instead. However, your post has inspired me to give it a try! It looks user friendly and similar to TikTok’s editing platform. Also, I really appreciate how you laid out the steps that you went through in CapCut and included photos along with it. I unfortunately am unable to see your video! It tells me the video is unavailable. I wonder if it is just me having this problem?
