A Bow-Tiful Cake!

This week, I decided to step outside my comfort zone and try incorporating non-icing decorations into my cake designs. While I’ve been having so much fun mastering piping and vintage-style cakes, I wanted to step up my work by adding a new element, bows! I’ve seen gorgeous cakes with bows , and I wanted to learn how to make them just right.

Learning the Art of Bow-Making

To learn how to make the perfect bow, I explored different online sources and found a great tutorial on a website called 101 Knots. The tutorial was super helpful because it broke the process down into simple steps, showing exactly how to get symmetrical loops and tails that look polished.

The website gave lots of pictures which worked great for me for because I am a visual learner.

I also checked out some Pinterest posts for inspiration on different ways to incorporate bows into cake decorating.

Here are the key takeaways I learned:

  • Make sure both loops are even before tightening the knot.
  • Trim the ends at an angle or in a V-shape for a professional finish.
  • Attach the bows carefully so they complement the overall design.

Applying My New Skill

After practicing with different types of ribbons, I finally created bows that I was happy with and attached them to my latest cake. I love how they turned out. I think they add such a sweet, vintage charm to the cake while making it look extra special.

Reflection on the Learning Process

Learning how to make bows was surprisingly satisfying. I initially thought it would be a quick skill to pick up, but I quickly realized there’s an art to making them look just right. Reading through the tutorial helped a lot because I could pause and replay tricky parts. Also, seeing some inspo on Pinterest gave me ideas!

I’m really proud of this week’s progress. I am excited to put all that I have learned into a themed cake next week.

Have you ever tried adding non-icing decorations to a cake? Let me know in the comments!

I also find it surprising it was such a learning process and there were things such as making sure they are even to make sure it worked properly, and the cutting to make it more professional! Good job, I love seeing the beautiful cakes you make!
