For this blog post, I looked through many different AI tools, however most of the ones I looked at were extremely similar to Chat GPT, which I am familiar with and I wanted to try something different. I eventually landed on Magic School. This is an AI tool made for educators to make creating lessons and resources a lot faster and easier.
Making an account is super straight forward, it just requires an email and password. At first glance, there are so many options for what you can create. It can create necessities like quizzes, rubrics and lesson plans, but it also goes as far as creating class news letters, social stories or an email to a family. This could completely change teaching for educators. So much time has been put into creating the perfect lessons and assessments that teachers are experiencing burn out so early on in their careers. By simply typing in the information that you want to be covered in a lesson or assessment, it can be created for you within seconds. This can reduce a lot of stress for teachers. Additionally, it is going to generate something that you have never done before, or maybe never even thought of before, creating a brand new learning experience for your students.
This is the home page of Magic School:
I decided to try out one of the tools to see if it is something that I would maybe want to use in my future classroom one day. I decided to go with creating a lesson plan. It took me basically 10 seconds to put the information in. You just put the grade level and topic in and it generates you a lesson plan immediately. The lesson plan it generated was pretty good. It aligned directly with the outcome that I provided and it is something that I could see myself using in the classroom. The only thing it did not provide was the actual resources, which leaves some additional work for you to do.
One thing that is excellent about this AI tool, as well as I’m sure many other AI tools, is that you can type in if there are any accommodations that need to be made for a lesson plan and it will do that for you. Even if you have a lesson that you came up with yourself, if you have a student that required certain needs but you are not sure how to meet them, you can use AI to help you out.
There is a lot of negativity surrounding teachers and students using AI. Many people consider it the “easy way out” of something. After testing it out, I believe that it is perfectly fine to use it to a certain extent. If you are having difficulties accommodating certain students or want to try a lesson that you have never done, AI is a great choice for that. However it should not be used for everything. I am sure there are many more AI tools out there for educators. I am looking forward to exploring some of them and seeing if it is something that I want to implement into my classroom!
Hey Camryn! I think that MagicSchool can be a very helpful tool for teachers. I totally agree that it is appropriate for teachers to use AI in certain contexts.
