What’s Next in my Learning?
So now that I have completed a toddler-sized skirt, what is next? Well, I’ve decided my next skirt needs to be adult size. I want to make a ribbon skirt for my best friend for Christmas.
I bought some fabric that I felt would be cute to wear to our school, we are both Educational Assistants so when I found these fabrics, I thought they would be perfect to wear at work. I also thought it would be great for us to have matching skirts, so I want to make hers with an accent of my fabric and vice-versa!
So I purchased two meters of both fabrics, and I am hoping that will be enough to do both of our skirts! My plan is to do something like this, I looked for inspiration photos but nothing quite matched the look I was going for so I decided to draw my own idea.
The next step was to try and find ways to make it a little easier than the last time. The things I struggled with most included sewing the ribbons together, keeping my stitching straight and even, and controlling my foot on the sewing machine pedal. So I decided to do some research on how to sew for beginners.
While I came across a few insightful websites, like this one that gave helpful information about using your foot pedal when sewing, and this Reddit post about foot pedal sensitivity, nothing seemed as helpful as going to my mom for advice. She’s been a crafter for many years and she dabbles in all sorts of Indigenous art forms! She told me that maybe overlapping the ribbons would be a better method for next time cause trying to sew them side-by-side was extremely challenging.
So now that I have received a few helpful tips, I feel ready to take on my next skirt!
Hello Christen, you’re friend is very lucky! The fabric that you chose is very beautiful and cool. I love that your mom has been giving you tips during your learning project journey. I can’t wait to see the final product! Good job!
