Week 11: Multilingualsm

Canada isĀ  a place that loves to show off its diversity as a country, and today in all classrooms you will find many different students who come from all different places. As an educator it is important to understand that some of your students may be learning the universal language of English and may not even speak the language within there homes. One important aspect of teaching is being able to be adaptable, In Cummins’s article he stresses being able to be adaptable through and with the curriculum as praxis model. Being adaptable means being able to create learning opportunities towards creating that equitable classroom. In turn this adaptability will improve engagement by allowing students to use there linguistic differences and help with there development.

There are multiple different ways to integrate multilingual instructional strategies within the classroom. Cummins proposes strategies like sharing words or even experiences from there own culture/language, this will allow for that particular student to feel welcome within the classroom and will also allow your other students a chance to learn words and language of one different of there own. This can also encourage multilingualism, something I did not value much when I was younger and now I have come to realize just how valuable of a skill it is. As educators it is important to keep every single one of your students engaged in the classroom, the integration of multilingual strategies within the classroom is vital to creating an inclusive environment for your students and will ultimately make engagement easier.
