Technology in Classroom

Planning digital citizenship for future or current classrooms is a tough job. Internet use is all over the world. Within a few seconds any messages conveyed reach out to the world. Digital citizenship is a skill that should be taught to navigate the digital world safely. I would also teach the classroom the 9 elements of digital citizenship

  1. Digital Access is about the equitable distribution of technology and online resources. Students should be taught how to use technology safely to be aware of the community whom they have access and to provide free access to the resources they need.
  2. Digital Commerce is to  discuss the safety of online buying and selling including the

safety tips and awareness of the scams and the consequences in online trading.

3) Digital communication and collaboration is the electronic exchange of information. Teaching about being respectful to others by decent comments and hoping to get decent feedback in return.

4)Digital Etiquette is a very important rule to be learnt in the classroom so when using digital devices it is important to be aware of others and respect everyone’s ideas.

5)Digital Fluency is to understand the technology and its uses. Students who know about technology use will stay away from negative comments.

6)Digital health and welfare is to know how much students spend on screen time that can affect their mental health and well-being. So students should take breaks from screen time.

7)Digital Law is about learning the concept of plagiarism, respecting others’ works or setting goals for academic honesty and copyright in assignments.

8)Digital rights and responsibilities are to respect others’ rights online, such as privacy and responsibilities of respect.

9)Digital security and privacy is to create skills in protecting strong passwords, to be aware of posting online kinds of stuff, and to navigate with privacy settings.

Week Seven Biryani

Mutton Biryani:

https://www.indianhealthyrecipes.com/mutton-biryani/

For this week I am posting my traditional recipe called Biryani. This is my favorite recipe. We usually make it at the time of gatherings, festivals, or any function. I usually make a simple biryani that my elders taught me to cook. But today for the blog I wanted to learn a new original style of cooking biryani. In Swasthi’s Biryani, she has posted 3 types of biryani recipes. The first one was Hyderabadi Pakki Dum Biryani, the second one was Kacchi dum biryani and the third one is mutton biryani in a pressure cooker. For this blog post to learn a new recipe I made the third one which is mutton biryani in a pressure cooker. India has more than 36 states including union territories. Therefore each state has a traditional way to cook biryani.  For the purpose of the blog post, I chose Hyderbabi mutton biryani in a pressure cooker.

This post gave me a detailed description of marinating the mutton, how to cook mutton and make it tender and good to eat. How to cook rice in a proper way. All these tips were very important to make a perfect biryani in a pressure cooker.

It worked out very well and all the spices were mixed well and it turned out a traditional tasty biryani. I have added my pictures of cooking in a pressure cooker.

Week Six UPMA

Week Six  October 29 ;

Upma // step by step guide:

https://www.indianhealthyrecipes.com/upma-recipe-how-to-make-upma/

This week I am posting a breakfast or dinner recipe called UPMA. This is made from semolina flour. Usually, this recipe is served at times of religious gatherings at temples in India. I tasted this one when I went with my friends for a gathering.  It was delicious and just wondered how they made it because I loved to make it on my own. Time passed and I did not get time to cook and try independently. Now for this class, as I have to try new recipes every week I thought of trying this upma recipe

I tried all the steps stated in the step-by-step guide The instructions were clear to follow. I had trouble roasting the somalina as it was very soft when I roasted the last end part of the somalina got a little burnt because I did not know how to roast it. Then I took half the part of semolina which was good roasted in a proper manner and started cooking. But for next time I learned that I should roast it or stir it as fast as I can with a low flame so that it does not get burned.

Overall I got most of the semolina in a good state that I used for cooking. I have added pictures of frying the onions and other ingredients mentioned in the recipe. I did not like to add cashews in my recipe so I did not add it. Other than that the recipe worked out very well. It was good not so delicious as I tasted in temples but overall I could eat it and used it for my breakfast. It said to add sugar or squeeze lemon on it i decided to have a pickle instead of lemon which tasted very good. Attached are pictures of my cooked upma and also added the link from where I prepared or learned this recipe.

Thank you

Techology in Classrooms

First reflecting on the class digital citizenship is that media has become very popular all over the world. It has changed a lot. Early years ago, it was just friends who posted (mailed) letters to connect, or for emergencies telegram was used to convey urgent messages. But now it is changed that if one person posts something online it goes to their own group or even to an unknown person if it is opened to all. We never know who reads it and what dangers can come from it. They should have boundaries for young girls and teach cyber safety to protect everyone.

Regarding Wesch’s video on An Anthropological Introduction to Youtube it talks about the unique culture and the implications of participatory media. It talks about how schools can use digital sources for educational purposes and how it has changed when it is not properly used.

For future classrooms, it can bring active learning and participation rather than simply relying on textbooks. It gives opportunities for students to learn new platforms now we are learning in class different technology. Digital media has a good connection of networking at the same time it should be used safely and be aware of what we are posting and who is our indeed audience.

For the implications for schools in general Wesch’s video emphasizes that schools need to help students understand digital citizenship, and media literacy and understand how it works and the benefits and responsibilities of participating in media.

To balance challenges and opportunities in digital education it is useful when digital literacy is offered with critical thinking for the future students to navigate digital media in a safe and secure manner.

Week Five; Delicious Tomato Rice Recipe

Week Five:

Tomato rice recipe.

This is my favorite recipe. I remember my mom used to cook this when I attended school in India. This was my lunch with fried or boiled eggs as a side dish for this tomato rice. This is tomato sauce mixed with rice. I get a good flavor when mixed with other ingredients like onion and whole gram masala spices like bay leaf, cardamom, and cloves. The step-by-step recipe is posted with the YouTube link.

After I came to Canada I have not made this because my children always like Canadian foods with fewer spices and mostly use soya sauce or other sauces to mix with rice. When I tried this tomato rice recipe it was overall good. But after not cooking this for many years I felt that I had added more hot chilies and salt.

Then for the last step because I had already cooked and I did not want to waste it I added some sugar to the tomato recipe then it was not that spicy for me. I have added the pictures of my cooked tomato rice recipe. I love this food and I think I will make some more rice and mix the rice with the tomato sauce store it in the refrigerator and eat it whenever I want.

Pro tips for this recipe:

Rinse rice well a few times to get rid of the starch. Soak it well for at least 30 mins. Basmati rice can be used.

Ingredients:

2 cups basmati rice

Tomatoes 2 to 3

Learning Project Tool / CANVA

For my learning project, I first tried most of the apps given in our courses. I was most attracted to Screencastify. I opened a new account for it, but I am not sure I found lots of things, or maybe I do not know how to use it. I have taken screenshots of it.

After trying other apps, I liked Canva. I opened an account with my Gmail and took screenshots of it. The website is given below. I am using the free version for now.

https://www.canva.com/

I tried many YouTube videos. I have posted the video which I liked.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FN4Cu7

What I learned after opening Canva is that there are free templates to choose from for presentations. We can share files, and images and download or upload anything that we need for our presentation. For schools, we can select grades and teach the class. We can also create resumes.

My learning project is K to grade 3. I would mostly focus on word spellings and sounds. Math lessons with simple math.

As far as I learned about SAMR it is a Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition. I have just opened an account in Canva. I am not aware to play around so for the first step I would use it as a Substitution model to use the slides or templates already built in.

For the second step I would like to learn more i can add up stuff of my own which gives thinking templates like blanks or dashes in fill-in-the-blanks for English like c-t, d-g, or math addition or substratiions. This would be an augmentation project.

For the third step, I would play around the English words or maths and use my own words or numbers which alignes with my presentation to get to one step higher with modification.

Finally, I can also redefinition the presentation by asking students about their thoughts and feedback and also ask them what other creative things can be done in this presentation making them interact and enjoy.

So we can use all the SAMR models in the Canva presentation.

Week Four Chutney

Week Four Chutney

step by step guide for chutney recipe.

https://www.indianhealthyrecipes.com/coriander-coconut-chutney/

This is another side dish called chutney. A step-by-step recipe is given in the link.

With this, it is a whole set that goes with the very first recipe called idly. It can also be used as a second side dish for dosa posted on the second week of the recipe if people prefer to eat something other than potatoes.

Everything worked out well while cooking as I followed the step-by-step instructions from the link. The only thing that did not work was while tempering I forgot to put it in a lower flame so a kind of all the tempering ingredients like mustard, chilli, and urad dal got more tempered than normally it should be.

The second thing I found out that while grinding the coconut pieces in the blender i thought it made a proper bled, but when I finished it set aside, and tasted it after it cooled down I found out that the coconut should be given a few more minutes in the mixer to get blend well. Overall it was good and it was a good side dish for idli and dosa of my first and second weekly posts.

Week three Masala Dosa’s Potato Receipe

My week three recipe:

Masala Dosa’s potato recipe.

This is the side dish for the recipe called dosa in the second-week post. I have tasted masala dosa at restaurants. Today I tied my own masala dosa. I continued with Swasthi’s recipes because I found the dosa worked out well for me. The ingredients for this recipe were potatoes to boil, one large onion, 2 spoon oil to add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, chana dal, urad dal all ¼ spoon and fry in oil until it turns golden brown. Then add onion and fry until it turns golden brown. Lately, add the boiled potatoes.

The potatoes were not sure what quality it was from the superstore, I first boiled the potatoes in water and after half an hour they were not soft so I had to check every 10 minutes to see whether the potatoes were fully cooked. Finally, after one hour the potatoes were soft and I was able to smash them then I added the onion and added some salt to taste. I have attached the video for the full recipe in detail. Overall the potatoes were cooked and good to eat. The next recipe will be how to make chutney or sambar which also goes along with the dosa as a side dish.

Ingredients for the masala:

3 large potatoes

mustard seeds, cumin seeds, urad dal,

The pro tip I followed for this recipe is that I had to boil potatoes until tender. It says about 10 minutes. But my potatoes took more than 45 minutes to get fully soft.

Another tip was to fry the onion until it had an aroma of a golden brown color. Everything worked out very well.

Dosa of Week Two Recipe

Restaurant style Dosa

This is also a popular South Indian recipe called Dosa. It is one of my favorite recipes, but I was not able to cook it in Canada because we do not get the same quality of rice that Indian people use. Now, I have followed the instructions given in the video and bought rice and other ingredients from a superstore and other Indian stores. First Dosa when I tried it got burnt. The second dosa that I made was not cooked and got stuck in the pan and was not able to flip it.

Then, I had to Google for tips on how to make a perfect dosa. I learned that the flame should not be too high or too low. Then, I tried the other dosa, which was okay to eat. I will first attach the link that I followed for cooking.

https://www.indianhealthyrecipes.com/dosa-recipe-dosa-batter/

For my learning project first, I tried a simple dosa which means without a filling. For my next recipe of the week, I am going to make a filling to learn the fillings of dosa called masala dosa. Then that will be followed a recipe called sambar which also will go along with this Dasa as sidedish. It also says the chana masala recipe will be good as a side dish that will be followed for the following week. So want to learn the complete set that goes along with dosa. To try and eat delicious and healthy food.

There are also different kinds of dosa to try for my blog in the upcoming weeks.

First week IDLY Receipe

First week IDLY recipe;

Hello, my name is Fathima. I love to learn cooking from different states. I am from India there are more than 30 states or territories. It was my long-time dream to try different cooking recipes and cook delicious food for my children. But I do not get time to look for new recipes. Through this class, I got an opportunity to learn different cooking styles and to make new recipes for my children.

For the first week, I tried a recipe called IDLY.  This is a South Indian food. I will write step by step about how I made it and also attach the link from where I learned the recipe from.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzgzG2guCZo

Tips for soft idli

This is the descriptive like in English

https://www.steffisrecipes.com/2018/03/idli-batter-for-making-soft-kushboo-idli.html

I have taken pictures of all the steps on my phone and I am not able to upload it here.

But I have posted the detailed links

This cooking experience took me to back home India. I was thinking of how people work hard to start preparing for breakfast one day ahead of time. For example, the rice and the ingredients mentioned should be soaked for 4 to 5 hours. Then ground in a mixer for 30 minutes. Then we need to add salt and mix well. Then should be kept overnight to ferment. Only the next day we get to eat the IDLY. I tried and for the first time it worked well and it was soft and good. For my next blog, i am going to learn a new recipe.
