Learning Project Introduction

“It is something you can keep when I am not here”

I love making personalized gifts for those I am gifting something to because as my nana would say “it is something you can keep when I am not here” and it often represents something shared between the two people. One of the first gifts I remember my nana giving me was a beautiful crocheted angel for Christmas using my favourite colours for Christmas. To this day this angel is special to me because it is from someone I was inseparable from at the time who had put thought, love, and dedication into this present.

My nana tried to teach me how to crochet while I was watching her make angels but I was young and seemed mostly just fascinated. I knew I wanted to do it growing up but always told myself I don’t have the time or patience, but I feel as if that has changed over time. Since the pandemic, I have found it soothing to have a great amount of alone time to reflect and just be present where I am. With the recent passing of my papa and the significant decrease in my nana’s health, I have chosen to learn how to crochet to pass down from my nana when she is no longer here. I hope to one day use her pattern to make the angels she made for those who are close to me. For this project, I have decided to crochet a blanket for my boyfriend that he can keep with him over time.

I have struggled my entire life trying to relax and enjoy myself, but to also focus on a timely task. I find I lose interest in tasks that require patience and more than a few days to complete; with my recent diagnosis of ADHD, this makes more sense. Taking the time to crochet will allow me to focus on relaxing and grounding myself, but also assist me with learning to manage my ADHD better. I can crochet in the mornings before work, during downtime in the day, and before going to bed to reach these goals.
