So I think I am officially a granny. Or at least I have started the process lol.
I say this because I have finally created a granny square. I think I underestimated the granny’s because this wasn’t the easiest project. The online source that I have chosen for this learning project post is a YouTube video by Maddy Marie. The thing that enticed me to choose this video was the title ” How to Crochet a Granny Square for Beginners *updated tutorial*”. My thought process when seeing the words ‘updated tutorial’ was that it would be a new and easier version of a granny square. Now since I don’t know any other way to create a granny square, I thought that this was a pretty good tutorial.
The issue I had with this tutorial is that it was a fast paced tutorial, where the creator did not take the time to repeat any steps. For that reason I did have to rewind and rewatch the video over 5 times. Now I will say that even with rewinding the video I did not do complete this project on the first try. I had to redo the project I think 3 times and almost lost the willpower to finish the project. On the first try the issue I had was stitching a double crochet, as it was my first time throwing this stitch. This did make the tutorial more difficult as the video I think was tailored to an audience that already knew how to crochet this stitch. For that reason I would say that this video is not made for ‘beginner, beginners’ but to a more mature audience.
Overall, I would give this tutorial a 7/10, just because I did have to rewind and rewatch it several times. Although I would recommend to someone that already knows how to stitch a double crochet.
On a good note… I am so proud of my granny square and I can’t wait to make more!

Hi Grace,
I’m so glad you didn’t give up! You made mistakes and learned from those mistakes. Characteristics like this are going to make you an amazing teacher! Have you ever tried reducing your playback speed on YouTube? This may help in videos that are being explained to fast. I love the playback speed option on YouTube. You will have to give it a shot. thanks for sharing and great work!

HI Grace!
I love how honest and relatable your reflection is—you really captured the ups and downs of learning something new! It’s great that you stuck with it even after a few restarts, and your persistence really paid off. I appreciate your detailed feedback on the tutorial and how you considered its suitability for true beginners. Huge congrats on finishing your first granny square! I can’t wait to see next weeks work!

Hey Grace,
Good for you for not giving up! Making mistakes and getting back up after them are what make you grow. I’m sure it was challenging to follow along with the videos when it goes super fast. I’m sure it took a lot patience. Your granny square turned out great though, great work!
