1) [Critical Hip Hop Pedagogy as a Form of Liberatory Praxis]: How can hip hop be used as a tool to promote social justice and youth activism in the classroom? What is the relationship between hip hop culture and the development of critical consciousness amongst students
After reading the article “Critical Hip Hop Pedagogy as a form of Liberatory Praxis” by A. A. Akom, the author describes how using hip hop in the classroom allows students to connect with a creative outlet that has roots in African American culture. This topic also opens doors to the conversation about social justice issues, such as racism. This jump-starts activism in the classroom around social justice issues. This provides African American students to learn in an inclusive, diverse environment that reflects their own culture and the issues at large. Having a more inclusive curriculum would disrupt the “mental incarceration”(56) that students of colour face. Using hip hop as a tool can then lead to social justice issues such as racism. Essentially then leads to creating a critical consciousness in some areas they had never thought about prior.
