Throughout ECS 100 I have learned a lot about Indigenous education and how it is very important to teach students about Indigenous cultures, traditions and the heartbreaking reality of Residential Schools. I think it is necessary that everyone learns about these things so that people can be more accepting and begin to work towards reconciliation. As a future teacher, I will take this knowledge that I have learned and I will continue to educate myself about the topics of Indigenous education. I will also ensure that I teach about these subjects in the classroom. I have recently learned a lot about Indigenous control of Indigenous education as well, so when I am a teacher I plan on bringing in an elder or an Indigenous leader to teach my class about Indigenous cultures. I think this will be beneficial and will help not only the students learn about Indigenous education from a knowledgeable Indigenous leader, but it will also benefit my teaching and give me a greater perspective on the world.
